A Fostered Love

Christian glanced at Abby, amused by her ire. She seemed to get her back up a hell of a lot with Rodrigo, just as Christian had done with Jonah not that long ago. “Rodrigo is his own boss and used to being in charge. He tends to be right, so I doubt he sees any point in changing.”

Abby snorted. “I don’t buy it. I’m my own boss too, and you didn’t see me making a decision for everybody. Anyway” -- she sidled in front of Christian and grabbed his arms --

“enough about the almighty Mr. Santiago.” Her blue eyes sparkled with excitement. “What about Jonah? Seriously, that was a hot kiss. And I saw that one in the parking lot through the rearview mirror, so I know it’s not the first. What the heck is going on with the two of you?”

“I don’t know.” Abby and Rodrigo both knew Christian was gay. Beyond that, he didn’t advertise himself or his feelings, but he also didn’t lie. His gut already said Jonah wouldn’t deny what had happened between them either. “We want each other, but we haven’t really talked about it beyond that.” Thinking about some of the other things Jonah had said last night, revealing such heartbreaking pieces of his soul, Christian couldn’t fake cool about this surprising turn of events. “There’s something about him, though, that always drew me to him, and it has only grown stronger since he came back. I want to know this man, who he is today, a thousand times more than the friendship I wanted with him when I was a kid.”

“You mean the serious crush you had on him,” Abby replied. “I may have been hiding in a corner most of the time I was here with you guys, but I remember that night the cops took Jonah away. I remember you telling him that you loved him. That’s a little more than wanting friendship.”

“True enough.” None of the other kids had ever harassed Christian about his outburst of emotion that night, but he knew they’d all witnessed it, and most of them understood what it meant. “I never did forget him. That was a crush, though, you are right. This…” His mind raced to find the right word. “This is different.” At this point, Christian didn’t know how to define what he and Jonah started last night. He wasn’t sure Jonah did either. “I don’t know what to say other than that.”

“You don’t have to say anything to me.” Abby leaned in and gave him a quick hug.

“Just be careful, not only with yourself, but with Jonah.” Looking at him with such earnestness in her eyes, Abby rubbed his arms. “There’s a lot of volatile stuff living right under the surface of that man, and I don’t know how well he would handle finding out you’re just living out a childhood crush after all.”

Christian shook his head. “I would never do that to him. It’s not --”

The phone rang, echoing through the house.
