Why hadn’t she asked?

Tucker sat on the edge of his bed and stared unseeingly at an autographed, framed poster of a sweat-soaked cycling team.

How could she have failed to pick up on it? He had just confessed that he had known David wasn’t ready for marriage. Yet she hadn’t asked why Tucker had kept silent, why he hadn’t tried to warn her.

Blind loyalty. That was what his mother had called it. But she’d never known how Tucker’s sixteen-year-old heart had been seared by the sounds of his brother sobbing in his sleep on the other side of the bedroom they shared. Tucker’s parents had never realized how bad it was, how often it happened. Night after night, for almost a year. And since they had no inkling of the horrors David alluded to only in his sleep, they’d never understood Tucker’s need to bulldoze every obstacle to David’s happiness.

He rubbed his eyes with the heels of his hands. Apart from ensuring that David’s baby would have the happy childhood its father had been denied, there was nothing more Tucker could do for his brother. But he could do something for Shelby.

David had called his brother “everyone’s best friend.” But Tucker hadn’t been Shelby’s friend, had he? He hadn’t stopped her engagement, so a child had been conceived. He hadn’t stood his ground and refused to ride motorcycles on a rainy night, so her fiancé had died. It was all Tucker’s fault that Shelby had been left alone and pregnant and afraid.

Whether she realized it or not, he owed her for that.
