Chapter eight

Aurora idly pushed the remnants of her meal around the plate. After the day’s event, her appetite was long gone, and the memory alone soured her stomach. Occasionally, she glanced across the room, watching Mayte nestled securely in Liliana, Joel’s mother’s embrace. The constant presence of her grandparents today meant she was rarely put down, instead being passed from arm to arm.

“Sweetie, you’ve barely touched your food,” her father’s concerned voice cut through her reverie.

“I’m not really hungry.” Aurora glanced up, giving him a nonchalant shrug. “I stopped by the store for gas and grabbed a snack earlier.”

“Why don’t you save it for later, then?” her mom gently suggested.

“Yeah, I’ll do that. Excuse me,” Aurora pushed her chair back from the table and stood, lifting her plate. “I’ll be back in a few; it’s about time to feed her.” She left the dining room and entered the kitchen, placing her plate on the countertop. Snippets of conversation could be overheard from the dining room.

“Ignacio, would you care to join me out back in the garage?” her dad inquired.

“Sure. It’s been a while since I’ve been out there. Joel told me you’ve done some remodeling.”

“Phelix, don’t you be out there tinkering with that car all night,” her mother fussed.

“We’re just going to watch ESPN, relax, and enjoy a drink or two, I promise.”

The sound of chairs scratching across the hardwood floors could be heard as she leaned back against the cabinets. Her thoughts drifted, the voices around her fading into a blur. She was in her feelings because she hadn’t heard from Joel since he left the parking lot at the church when he told her he would be by later. Well, it was later, and he hadn’t called or come by. His parents had mentioned he was with a friend, a piece of information that did little to ease her mind. It didn’t tell her who the friend was or if it was male or female. Was he with the same girl from the grocery store? Are they in a relationship?

“Aurora, did you hear me?” Her mom snapped her fingers in front of her face, causing her to return to reality.

“I... Sorry, what?” Aurora blinked away the fog of her thoughts.

“I said your baby daddy is on his way here. Can you fix him a plate and put it in the microwave?” Her mom waved toward the food. “Liliana and I will put the food away and clean the kitchen.”

“He’s probably eaten already,” Aurora murmured, in her feelings because Joel had yet to contact her.

“Girl, didn’t nobody ask you all that.” Her mother opened the oven and bent over to remove the rest of the meal. “I said to fix that man a plate.”

She pushed off the counter and started placing Joel’s food in a takeout container. Lost in her thoughts once again, Aurora barely registered her hands mechanically assembling Joel’s plate. Each movement was automatic, and her mind was laden with regret and what-ifs. The tightness in her neck and shoulders reminded her of her emotional baggage.
