DISEMBARKING FROM THE ferry in the beautiful town of Portree was the matter of a few minutes. Even with my inner turmoil, I felt surprisingly at home. If I’d been more of a romantic, I would have said I could sense the blood of my ancestors calling to me, telling me I was where I was meant to be.

At any other time, I would have brushed those thoughts aside. But given how my week had gone so far, I acted on a sudden, inexplicable urge.

Turning to Mark, I blurted the idea which had popped into my head out of the blue. “I know where to go.”

Without question, he nodded and held out the keys. “Okay. You want to drive?”

I almost said no, but the same insistent inner voice pushed me. “Actually, yes.”

Tossing me the keys without hesitation, he got in the passenger’s side.

From that moment on, I let my subconscious drive, literally. Without consulting a map or getting directions from Mark and his ever-handy phone, I let my feelings guide me. Each branch, every fork in the road was decided by the same gut instinct. We drove for hours like that, stopping twice for fuel and a pit stop, but otherwise allowing the strange navigator inside me to lead. Mark was quiet, seemingly content to go wherever the road led until after our second stop.

I could tell his curiosity was beginning to outweigh his calm, and I almost told him what I was doing. But then I felt it. Pulling over onto the shoulder, I turned the car off, pausing for a moment until I was certain.

I turned to him. “We’re here. We need to walk from here. Oh, and bring your bag. We’ll want our things with us where we’re going.”

His eyebrows shot up, but he waited for me to explain. When I didn’t, he placed his hand gently on mine. “Are you okay? Have you been here before?”

I thought about his question, not sure how to answer it. It did feel like I had, but when? To my knowledge I’d never set foot on Skye. I looked at Mark, wondering if he could see my confusion.

“Maybe?" I said at last, taking a deep breath and exhaling with a shudder. “The minute we stepped onto the island, I felt something calling to me.”

Mark looked at me thoughtfully, but I saw no judgement in his eyes.

In a quiet, contemplative voice he asked, “Does that surprise you?”

It was his easy acceptance which allowed me to admit the truth. “I’m more frightened how at home I feel. Do you think my dad did this? I mean, let this kind of illogical emotion guide him? It isn’t like me at all, but I wonder...”

Mark undid his seatbelt and gave me a smile. Warmth washed over me. None of this seemed to faze him, and I hadn’t realized how much I depended on his steadiness until that moment.

“I don't honestly know. You'd be a better judge of why he’d do something than I would, considering I’ve never met him.
