Chapter

Twelve

Only once they had exited the quieter residential streets into the nighttime bustle did Jonathan realize he had never been in the company of Dracula and the others among people, aside from frightened workers who had kept their distance. To walk amid the streetlamps and chaos of London nightlife with three supernaturally powered beings at his side, Jonathan felt both oddly exposed, yet practically invincible.

It helped that although being without his hat might have made Jonathan feel self-conscious, Lucian had offered him his.

The night remained clear and cool and carried more enticements with Jonathan’s heightened senses than he had ever known. He might have missed several turns along the way if he did not know this route from Mina’s home so well. They soon came upon the highly trafficked but majestic location where he wanted to bring them.

New London Bridge was perhaps the busiest spot in the city at any given moment, somewhat less so this late, but people in carriages and on foot still traveled, many in formalwear for evening outings or events. Eventually, the numbers would wane, but only in the darkest streets or alleyways, like where Jonathan had reunited with Dracula and his men, could someone find themselves truly alone.

From most anywhere near London Bridge, its parallel partner, Tower Bridge, could be seen in the distance, but the perfect view was from the very center. With the moon high and gas lamps lit, Tower Bridge was a remarkable sight, but far more so than Jonathan had seen in nights past, for his sharpened eyesight revealed it in luminous detail.

“Magnificent!” Lucian leapt closer to the ledge, one hand curling around the base of a doubled lamppost beside them.

Most people walked on with destinations in mind, the center of the bridge cluttered with carriages, but no one paid much attention to a few gawkers out of the pedestrian path.

“This bridge is likely to sink one day from what I have heard.” Jonathan Chuckled. “But the view is my favorite. Tower Bridge was completed only a few years ago. I used to go for walks each midday to watch the construction.”

“I see why.” Alexander stepped up beside Jonathan, gazing with equal reverence. “Like castle spires piercing the heavens.”

Dracula was on Jonathan’s other side, but with so many passersby, he could not get too close. The absence ached in Jonathan, not only because he longed for any touch from these men, but because even the simple act of an arm at his waist might be seen as worth condemning.

Lucian gripped the lamppost tighter, hunkering low as if to heft himself up.

“Don’t you dare climb atop that ledge with so many people about,” Alexander hissed, tugging on Lucian’s elbow to stop him. “I swear, as foolhardy as the night I met you.”

“How did you two meet?” Jonathan asked, once Lucian relented and released the lamppost to lean against the bridge instead. “I’ve wondered.”

“You mean guessed,” Lucian said, “even before I admitted my past or my brother’s disapproval. And indeed, there are many evil men in brothels.
