Around two o’clock that afternoon, I got a hankering for another one of Van’s macchiatos. Since I was pretty much done with all the work I needed to do, I got up, grabbed my debit card, and headed across the street as the last of her customers were getting ready to leave.

“Oh, no. Are you closed?” I asked as I stepped inside to find Van wiping down a table on my right.

Glancing up at me, a smile grew on her face. “Not just yet,” she said, grabbing her cloth and cleaner, motioning for me to head toward the counter. “We’ve still got about ten minutes.” I walked beside her until she went behind the counter, and I took the same stool I’d been in the other day. “The kitchen’s closed, but we’re still serving coffee if you’re up for it?”

Sighing with relief, I said, “That sounds perfect. Can I get another one of those caramel macchiatos again?”

Laughing a little, she said, “Comin’ right up, Sweetie.”

I paid her after she brought me my drink, but she didn’t seem like she wanted to keep cleaning just yet since she came around and took the stool next to me.

“It’s been a long one today, I tell ya.”

“You’ve been busy from what I could see,” I said, motioning around the little cafe. “You’ve had a line around the corner most of the times I’ve looked over here.”

A genuine smile came over her face as she glanced at the counter in front of us. “Yeah, we’re finally doin’ pretty good.”

Not thinking about the motion before I did it, I sent my hand out to pat her back lightly. “I’m so happy for you.” I brought my hand back to my drink. “I can tell this place means the world to you.”

We made eye contact as she said, “Yeah, it does. It’s the only thing I have left from my mom.”

“Then you should cherish it always,” I said without thinking, my voice full of reverence.

Smiling like she hadn’t expected me to say that, she said, “Oh, I will. There’s no doubt about it.” Then, she seemed to have a sudden thought. “Hey, the boys have some banquet to cater as soon as they leave today, so I was plannin’ on headin’ over to my favorite witchy store where my friend works. You wouldn’t wanna come with me, would you?”

My eyebrows lifted, and my smile grew.

Who knew how long my parents would be gone, and I didn’t really have that much work left to do anyway. Really, even if I didn’t get back to the rest of my work today, I’d still be fine. Plus, I’d wanted to check out some of the occult stores here at some point, and now seemed like as good a time as any.

“I’d love to.”

“Perfect!” she exclaimed as she got off the stool. “As soon as I close up, we can head that way. Sound good?”

“Yup!” I responded. “I’ll just go sit outside to wait.”

She nodded at me and started moving
