Chapter Thirteen

Despite the efforts of the police, the mayor’s office, and the witches combined, two more children went missing a few days later.

Hanna and Zofia Nowak were sisters living in one of the small villages on the outskirts of the Tealford borough. They had been walking the dog with their dad, never out of sight for a moment. No one could work out how they disappeared, but it devastated the tight-knit community. No one could understand how it could happen in the middle of the day, with witnesses seeing nothing.

The mayor’s response was to organise a vigil, to help the people come together and find support with their neighbours. As they gathered in the large town park, their fears and hopes were palpable in the air.

Mark hovered near Harry and Michelle; they were all dressed formally in dark shades. Which Mark now worried looked like they were at a funeral, jumping to the worst possible conclusion.

They stood silently, Mark couldn’t think of anything to say. The adults around them seemed to be well-trained at the polite small-talk, exchanging socially-acceptable laments and gentle hope. Mark wondered if they handed out a manual when you turned eighteen.

Occasionally he heard the rumble of discontent and distrust about the witches; because surely only magic could have taken the girls in broad daylight. And how else could someone take Imara from her bedroom?

Mostly people talked about how much they loved the missing children; and how much they would hurt if their own child vanished. They spoke of all their good memories, breathing life into them, and holding them dear.

It turned out that Hanna and Zofia were both keen footballers and had been part of the football club. They’d been at the football camp with Tyler, the second kid to go missing.

Mark felt a chill run down his spine. Three of the five kidnapped kids were linked to Damian, who was a trainer for the club. That meant they were linked to Robert…

Robert had been quiet and well-behaved since Mark had rescued him from the prison. Mark had assumed the quiet had been because of a truce… or had he still been scheming in the background? Had Will been right to accuse the demon? Mark felt sick that he chose to be so blind.

Mark spotted Damian, arriving behind his aunt and her girlfriend. He determinedly made his way to his boyfriend, but hesitated as he noticed Damian’s red eyes.

Mark heart ached in response to his boyfriend’s evident pain. “Are you alright?” Mark asked, wishing he could phrase it better.

“Yeah.” Damian said, his eyes looking a brighter blue against the redness from crying. When he turned his gaze to Mark, he looked like he was drowning and needed someone to save him. Mark hadn’t seen him look like that since he nearly died in winter…

“The police came round this morning.” Miriam said. “Those girls were part of the football club, and they had the same questions, and suspicions.”

“Oh Damian, I’m so sorry.” Mark said, taking his boyfriend’s hand and lacing their fingers together.
