Chapter 32

IT WAS THE FOLLOWING day by the time Gillian had come back. Kiren and Professor Lucas were both helping Elijah find things in his cabin that were still intact. Elijah had stayed the night in his mother’s cabin, and she’d fussed over him, making him rest. Madison had come by and spent most of the night there, sleeping next to him on a cot and asking him about how his medication was working for him. He considered what Lucas had said about it only being a temporary relief and wondered what the results would be of long-time excessive exposure. Elijah had taken three shots the day before, and he’d only been supplied with twenty syringes of the rare drug. Over half were already gone. He had no idea how to bring that up to his possible future step-dad.

From what Madison had told him, Gillian didn’t like the drug because it was a mixture derived from a poisonous and addictive plant. The shots had only a diminutive amount, but the remedy still could shut down a bodily system if used for long periods. He wondered what the recorded side effects of the Chameni were and if Lucas was aware of any of the physiological problems.

Madison followed Gillian up the stairs, carrying a brown paper bag that emanated the salty, greasy scent of french fries.

“We brought you lunch. Hamburger, medium-rare, everything on it?” Madison handed him the bag.

“Damn, you have a good memory; that must have been around two in the morning when we talked about southern cook-outs and burgers. Set it on the counter, please.” Elijah smiled at Madison and handed it back.

“Sure.” Gillian grabbed it, her eyes flicking to Elijah, then Madison, and walked to the small table, setting it down.

The aroma of salty hash browns and melted cheese made his mouth water. He was happy that, for once, his mouth wasn’t watering at the idea of eating human flesh.

“Well, we should probably head out,” Lucas said, grabbing Kiren’s coat and holding it open so she could slide in her arms.

“We should talk to him now that Gillian and his new healer are here,” Kiren said.

“Talk to me about what?” Elijah’s Southern twang thickened.

“Where exactly you’re going to stay now—” Kiren started.

“We were hoping Gillian would let you stay with her until repairs on your cabin are finished. Getting the materials right now might be tough. Your hunger is getting stronger, and Gillian is the only person besides Madison who knows about your condition.”

“There’s no other cabin?” Gillian's brow furrowed.

“He can stay with me,” Madison said, her tone light as she shrugged.

“This is highly unusual, and the town will certainly say something. But, if Elijah's hunger worsens and he’s in the wrong cabin….” Lucas squinted at Kiren, waiting for her to help.

“This is a horrible situation, yes. But there’s no other option. Lucas has one room, and I have a roommate. And since Madison is now your healer, she lives right next to Gillian,” she waved a hand at Gillian.
