How it worked out that Hera didn’t ride in to find the earth launching beneath my feet is beyond me. Or Aero, for that matter. He certainly wouldn’t let me get away without explanation yet again. My aunts would say it was the luck of the stars, but they would be wrong. Luck is a word for the weak. A word my opponents like to use when describing my victories because they can’t face the harsh reality that I am better than them. If they spent less time thinking about fate and more time training, they wouldn’t have to worry about such childish things. Aero and Hera will be back soon from moving our things into the surviving travelers’ campsite. Sorrow leans over to hand me my pack.

“You know, you can’t hide it forever.”

My heart stops. I want to disappear the way Skira can and pretend this isn’t happening. I thought maybe she had been so distracted from the battle she didn’t notice, but I should have known better. She’s always been so observant. There were times I went too long in between the doses my aunts gave me, the occasional bush rapidly sprouting blooms nearby, or a root suddenly lifting up from the ground to trip one of the other stone holders. Of course, I would play it off like they were simply fools, but I’m surprised it’s taken this long for her to notice. She sits down and places her hand on my knee.

“It doesn’t make you any less worthy of a stone—or the throne, for that matter.” She tries to draw my gaze to hers, but I refuse. I still might be able to save this from becoming a thing. I stand and dust the dirt off my bottom.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” The words hurt on their way out, and I know they’ve stung Sorrow. Her eyes fill with tears, and I turn away, marching toward Otis with my remaining items. “A lot happened back there. I can see how you might have gotten confused.” Pulling the leather strap through and buckling it down, I hear her footsteps behind me.

“I might not have a killer instinct like you, but I’m not blind, Evanthe. I’ve witnessed you using the thicket as a weapon on many occasions over the years. Did you really think I didn’t know?” She paces from one side of the camp to the other. “Or that I would go on forever letting you think I had no idea?”

As much as it pains me to admit, it’s not fair that I’ve kept this from her for so long. She’s been there for me through it all. Every gut-wrenching Games, through the coldest winters when Gusta struggled to produce any milk, and the weeks when I didn’t want to wake up after my mother was taken from me. I was unbearable. Of all the people I don’t share blood with, she is the only one I am certain would never tell a soul of this curse.
