Chapter 29

‘‘Let us do the rest?’’ said Jessica on the pavement outside the station. ‘‘He actually said that?’’

‘‘Yep,’’ replied Kenta whom she noted was looking more than a little tired, and with his torn trousers and bloody knee came across as some semi-ragged street character more than a straight-laced pupil.

‘‘So, basically he was telling us to piss off?’’

Kenta shrugged. ‘‘I wouldn’t say that.’’

‘‘And he wouldn’t listen to our theory about the security guard?’’

‘‘Look,’’ said Kenta, betraying a flash of irritation as he turned to face Jessica. ‘‘We told him all the important stuff, and he said he’s going to look into it. What more are we supposed to do? We’re just pupils! They’re the actual police.’’

‘‘Pupils who figured out more than they ever did,’’ Jessica muttered.

Kenta went to say something else, but perhaps the will to argue was leaving him, and he only stared mournfully at the passing traffic with the oncoming headlights glinting in his eyes.

A sharp and cool breeze came along the street. Jessica buried her hands in her coat pockets and realised then just how riotously hungry she was. Looking around, she had no idea where she was. She didn’t want to go home yet, not with the fierce energy still burning in her.

‘‘Do you know anywhere I can eat around here?’’

Kenta, who’d perhaps been expecting more of a fight from her, seemed taken aback by the question. ‘‘Oh… yeah. A few. What do you like?’’

Jessica shrugged. ‘‘I’m not fussed. I’d eat anything right now.’’

‘‘You tried okonomiyaki yet?’’

Jessica looked at him blankly. ‘‘Okonomi-what?’’

‘‘It’s a pancake, a savoury one. The best places are in Osaka and Hiroshima, but there’s a couple of good spots here.’’

‘‘Sure, I’ll try it. Point me in the right direction.’’

‘‘I’ll show you. There’s a good place in Gion. It’s just over the river.’’

‘‘Okay, thanks.’’ Jessica was more than a little surprised. She’d presumed Kenta would bolt at the first opportunity. She wanted to eat something quickly so she could get back to planning and researching, but the mention of Gion had piqued her interest. It would be a fitting end to the day, after all, to visit the very geisha district where the real Otake Okimi had once lived and worked.

‘‘You sure the knee’s okay?’’ said Jessica as they walked.

Kenta waved it off. ‘‘I’m fine. It’s not so bad.’’

They were soon crossing the Shijo Bridge over the Kamo River, which took them onto Shijo Dori. It was more compact and even more bustling than the downtown area they’d just come from. They passed all manner of shops and restaurants. Food smells filled Jessica’s nostrils – beef, cabbage, steamy noodle clouds, grilled chicken. She had a vague recollection of passing along this street on the whistle-stop tour she’d been forced to take on arriving in Kyoto, but as with most of the sights she’d seen that day, she’d been too annoyed with her parents and generally furious at the move to Japan to pay any of it any real attention. But when Kenta deviated from
