not merely legitimated by Christian theology, but is actually demanded on account of the Christian understanding of the nature of realityâ (2001: 20).
On this view, the choice to engage in a dialogue between the natural sciences and Christian theology is by no means motivated by a random personal interest, or a creative intellectual endeavour, and neither is it merely a pragmatic strategy, designed to bring about a sort of academic âtruceâ between theology and the rest of the Academy. Rather, it is the public function of giving an account of our truth-claims because we believe they refer to something real. Any ârespectable Christian world-view will insist it has something to say in responseâ to the other disciplines that offer explanations about the different strata of reality (2002: 119).
McGrath is aware of the consternation over Bhaskarâs âspiritual turnâ within CR (Morgan 2003, cited in McGrath 2008), but nonetheless proceeds to make a claim for the explanatory power of the Christian tradition:29
Although specific to the Christian tradition, this style of natural theology has aspirations to universality. It offers a coherent organising logic which is able to account, not only for its own existence, but also for that of its intellectual and spiritual rivals. In short: natural theology offers and embodies a traditionspecific yet trans-traditional rationality, which is grounded in the particularities of the Christian tradition alone.
(McGrath 2008: 249)
