The jailhouse noise quieted over the course of the three hours since Fin was pushed into the cell. The midnight chatter was low, just murmurings of gossip spoken under the snores of sleeping prisoners. Everyone in the cells knew the score. Some knew they’d be out by morning, their bail money or bribes paid, their cases dropped. For Fin Donner, though, these three hours in the cell would be the extent of her incarceration, because upstairs in an office of police headquarters, the plan she’d put into place was playing out: Five Cent Frankie—whose longstanding and cozy arrangements with the police made his word unquestioned—was rescinding his accusation of theft against Fin. “It was a grievous mistake on my part,” Frankie told the officer in charge. “You see, I’d misplaced my tin box, which I found moments ago. My fifty dollars is quite in my possession. You can surely imagine my relief, and my regret for the trouble I’ve caused my good friend Fin Donner. You must release Fin at once and with my deepest apologies.” Frankie gave the officer his sincerest smile and a handshake with Fin’s ten-dollar gold coin pressed in his palm.
