Why is tai chi considered an internal style?

Tai chi is not just made of slow muscle movements. It also uses other structures, like bones and ligaments, which contribute to the growth of movement and, combined with the will, to the movement of chi through the body.

What does ’i’ mean?

I, “will,” is the primary and essential spring of power that moves one’s intention. Without it, one can have the desire to perform a particular action but not be able to put it into practice. For example, if we have a pot full of water on the stove, we can turn on the gas (chi), but without the will to light a match (i), the water will never boil. This means that practicing tai chi is not enough. We also have to keep intention in our mind and constantly maintain all the techniques.
