CHAPTER

FIFTEEN

Why would he bring these with him?

Joe stared at the handcuffs. They were sturdy, professional.

Even if Dan were a cop, why would he have them in his coat when he was looking for his wife? Were they always in this pocket, or had he made a point to take them with him today?

Joe had to ask now. “Are you a cop?”

Dan was a wall of granite. “A man has a right to carry a firearm in this country.”

“So…you’re saying you’re not a cop?”

“What I am is my own business.”

Nicole scoffed. “See, Joe? He’s trying to hide the truth.”

“Damn it, Katie!” Dan said. “You know damn well what is and isn’t the truth. Your sick mind just refuses to accept it!”

“You love handcuffing people, don’t you? Especially your girl. You like to cuff my wrists to my ankles. Do you get the same thrill when you slap those cuffs on other people? Get the same hard-on when you ruin their lives by throwing them in jail for things they didn’t even do, just so you can show your fellow pigs what a bad ass cop you are?”

“Enough!” Joe said, surprising everyone, including himself. “Dan, turn around. I’m cuffing you.”

Dan whispered. “No. Not now. She’s lost in completely, man. She’s dangerous. We have to make a grab for her.”

Nicole moved closer, trying to hear.

Joe whispered to Dan. “You’re gonna scare her off.”

“We let her have her way and she might kill us or herself. We have to grab her.”

Nicole stepped in. “What are you two saying?”

“I’ll go low,” Dan whispered, “you go high. Try and take the knife away. She’s less likely to stab you than me.”

Joe’s heart raced as Nicole came closer, holding out the hunting knife as if it were a battle sword. Her naked chest and belly rippled with goose bumps, the cold deepening in its cruelty. The snowfall grew heavier, thick like the coming night.

“Ready?” Dan said.

Joe certainly wasn’t. His indecisiveness flustered him.

“Here we go,” Dan said, getting into a lunging stance.

Nicole was upon them now. “Don’t you fucking move!”

As Dan pounced, Nicole darted with the knife.

Joe raised the pistol and fired.
