Chapter Eight

Lorenzo eased from the couch once Ray was fast asleep. He’d felt something strange happen when he claimed his mate. He’d played it off, but there was no denying that something had entered both of them, had sown their souls together in a way that made Lorenzo uneasy.

It wasn’t normal.

He brushed his hand over Ray’s silky hair before he moved into the hallway outside the apartment door and pulled his phone free. But before he could call anyone, an old woman walked toward him, a pleasant smile on her face and a plate of cookies in her hand.

This wasn’t strange at all. Old ladies carrying cookies approached Lorenzo all the time. Right.

“You must be Lorenzo,” she said as she shoved the plate toward him. Lorenzo grabbed it before it fell to the floor. She moved around him, her blue eyes assessing. “Very dark inside you, young man.”

“Who are you?” Lorenzo asked.

“Very dark indeed.” She clicked her tongue. “Not quite what I was expecting for my grandson. Handsome, yes, but inside you have a lot of luggage.”

“Lady, I’m not sure who…wait, did you say grandson?” Could this be Ray’s grandmother? She moved with a grace that someone her age shouldn’t have. And there was something peculiar about her. Lorenzo was willing to bet dollar to donuts that she hid a lot of her own secrets.

“Go ahead,” she said as she waved a hand toward the door. “Since Ray wasn’t expecting me, I’ll give you a few minutes to make sure he’s decent.”

Lorenzo had an urge to blush. She knew what he and Ray had done. He nodded and opened the door, hurrying inside before he set the plate aside. Moving to the couch, Lorenzo squatted and placed a kiss on Ray’s cheek. “Wake up, beautiful.”

Ray groaned and swatted at Lorenzo. “Go away. I’m too tired.”

“Your grandmother is here.”

Ray shot up and glanced around, his eyes wide as he teetered to the side slightly. His hair was sticking up everywhere, and Lorenzo had never seen anyone more strikingly handsome. “Where?”

He pointed toward the door. “She’s out in the hallway, waiting for you to get decent.”

Ray’s eyes grew wider. “What? Are you serious?” He stood, his full nudity making Lorenzo hard. He watched as Ray rushed down the hallway, and then a door slammed.

Lorenzo smiled as he walked to the front door and let Ray’s grandmother in. “He’s getting dressed.”

Her nose rose slightly as she clutched her purse and looked around. Lorenzo was nervous. He had no clue that Ray had a grandmother, and he felt as though he was being sized up.

Ray rushed back down the hallway and then came to a hard stop. “Grammy! What are you doing here?”

“Spreading the Christmas cheer.” Her smile was tight as she glanced between Ray and Lorenzo. “I also brought you some cookies since you seem so jealous of Johnny.”

“Johnny?” Lorenzo asked. “The guy at the coffee shop?”

“You’re quick on the uptake,” she said to Lorenzo. “I didn’t have to draw you a map to my conversation.
