Picatrix

When the late-fourteenth-century Arab historian Ibn Khaldun spoke out against magic he had one book to hand, a book whose author the satirist Rabelais later called ‘the reverend father in the Devil [. . .] rector of the Diabolical faculty’. It was called in Arabic Ghâyat al-Hakîm fi’l-sihr (‘The Goal of the Wise’) or, as it was known in Europe, Picatrix. As Ibn Khaldun wrote:341

These are sciences showing how human souls may become prepared to exercise an influence upon the world of the elements, either without or with the aid of celestial matters. The first kind is sorcery, the second kind is talismans. These sciences are forbidden by the various religious laws, because they are harmful and require [their practitioners] to direct themselves to [beings] other than God, such as stars and other things.342
