ANYA

Kayla escorted Anya into her mother’s chamber, leaving her there. The room was cast entirely in shadows except for a candelabra set near Lady Highland.

“It’s good to see you again, dear girl.” Lady Highland gestured to a chair. “Take a seat.”

Anya obeyed.

“My apologies for the poor lighting. At my age, the light gives me headaches.”

“It’s…fine.”

Lady Highland was a tall woman, and so thin she looked like she might snap in two, which was ironic considering how powerful she was.

“I hear you’ve had quite an adventure over the last few days.” Lady Highland’s tone was stern.

“It’s certainly more excitement than I’m used to.” Anya tried to shrink within herself, terrified of the stoic woman.

“My good husband is beside himself with grief over this ordeal,” Lady Highland said with an amused look playing on her face, “and I certainly hope it will come to a close soon.”

“As do I.”

“So, tell me. Where does Elric fit into all this?”

“Elric?”

“Yes, Elric.”

“He’s…I don’t know. I know almost nothing about him.”

Lady Highland’s face hardened, revealing gaunt lines around her eyes and mouth. “We have a beast terrorizing the land, and he controls a beast.”

Anya’s hand flew to her chest. “It wasn’t him! Dalla would never do such a thing! And I’ve been with him during some of the murders.”

“I am aware. Lest you forget, he was caged and under guard with his wolf when Gwen met her fate,” Lady Highland said, waving her hand dismissively. “But he knows something.”

She was right, Anya could feel it. Elric was hiding something, but she didn’t know what.

Lady Highland frowned. “Tell me, Anya, what has he told you about himself?”

“What has he told me? Next to nothing.”

“Surely he’s shared something with you. He wasn’t at all forthcoming with me, but I’m not a young maiden.”

“He says he’s from the Den in the Dusklands. He calls his family his ‘pack,’ and I think that includes his friends as well.”

Lady Highland crinkled her forehead. “Go on.”

“His wolf’s name is Dalla, and he calls her his ‘wolf sister.’ She’s more than just a pet.”

“How did he acquire her?”

Anya thought for a moment. “He said the wolf’s mother chose him. That his pack lives with them…in peace. Oh, and they’re hunters.”

“Men are so stupid,” Lady Highland spat.

“Pardon?”

“Oh, Anya, it’s obvious. Think for a moment.”

Anya tried to figure out what Lady Highland was getting at. How all this could figure into the murders, but drew a blank.

“Elric has a monstrous beast, and a monstrous beast is hunting the land. It’s not Elric’s beast, but he mysteriously arrives in town during the time of several murders. His ‘pack,’ as it’s called, lives amongst wolves. Do I have to spell it out for you?”

“You think Elric knows the killer,” Anya said. Deep down, she’d already come to this conclusion, but she couldn’t give the thought life. Not until now.

Lady Highland smirked, and Anya knew she was right.

“Now what?”

“Now, you find out everything you can from the man,” Lady Highland commanded.

“Everything I can?”

“Yes, you’re a beautiful woman. It should be easy for you.
