Chapter 10

Several days after her arrival on Tarkkua, Nova stared across the dinner table at Zylonn, trying to work up the courage to ask him about the video comms she’d heard some of the wealthier Tarkkuans had in their houses. She picked at her food, wondering if perhaps he knew anyone who owned one. She hadn’t seen him talking to any other Tarkkuans since her arrival on their planet to have an idea if he even had friends who might be wealthy enough to possess such technology, as she hadn’t left the house yet. Each day, he left for work in the morning and returned before nightfall though, so she reasoned that even though she hadn’t seen him speaking with anyone, he probably had at least a few friends.

She glanced out the dining room window as the sun set over the distant mountains. Although she hadn’t left his house yet, she didn’t feel like a prisoner. His house was huge and contained many windows, all with resplendent views. For the first time in her life, she had gone more than three days without seeing a dust storm. Now that she knew how beautiful and lush a planet could be, she couldn’t imagine ever returning to Earth.

As that thought crossed her mind, she felt immensely guilty. She’d left so many wonderful people behind. Her throat burned as she tried to guess what her parents were doing at this very moment.

“I don’t want Nova to leave.”

Was it dinnertime in New Leesburg right now? After traveling for weeks through space, she had lost all track of Earth time.

“I don’t want Nova to leave.”

But she’d left. She’d left and she would never return.

Was Julie still playing piano every day? Did Maggie stop by the house and visit her family, just as she’d promised to keep doing?

The Tarkkuans would deliver written letters from female humans every year when the Zenallia traveled to Earth to collect brides for their returning miners, but she couldn’t imagine waiting an entire year to send word to her family and friends. She prayed there was a way to arrange for her to use a video comm. But would Zylonn be angered by her request?

She hadn’t spoken out against the agreement between their worlds since the first time he caught her talking out of line, the night she first arrived on this planet. She’d been on her best behavior since then, only earning the short reminder spanking for not turning around and showing him her bottom fast enough. She had also tried her best to keep house and make traditional Tarkkuan meals. Part of her education while growing up had included cooking classes. Her father had once joked that he never thought one of his daughters would go to a finishing school, and when she’d gone to her room and looked up the meaning of finishing school on her computer, she’d realized that yes, she was basically attending a finishing school of sorts—except instead of an Earth girl from the 1800s
