Chapter 20

Clover’s stomach boiled with tension as the two of them crawled through the bushes, commando-style. She’d never felt fear like it. Sheriff Trent, in his true demon form, was a force of nature. If she couldn’t get through to him then he would kill them in the most gruesome fashion. She had faith she could win, but even that was eroding with every second.

She turned to Jared, who gave her a positive smile. It was just what she needed to go on.

“We’ll be fine,” he whispered. “I believe in you.”

She blew him a kiss and continued.

After about five minutes, they reached a plateau. Green moss hung over the sides, showing them a great valley carved into the earth. It was easily as big as Chapel Green—and just as populated.

“What’s going on?” she asked.

Jared appeared as perplexed as she was. “I have no idea. Why hasn’t he killed everyone?”

Aside from the people walking around there were buildings. They weren’t huge architectural marvels, just mere wooden buildings, but there were hundreds of them, thousands maybe, lying in neat blocks. At the center of the city was a larger stone built building, which resembled some sort of Aztec pyramid. Smoke crept from a funnel at the top, twisting into the sky like fingers.

The air smelled of roasted pig.

“It’s like an Egyptian pyramid,” Jared whispered. “Fascinating.”

“It’s actually more like a Mesopotamian ziggurat,” Clover said. “Though much, much larger than the ones found on our earth in the Middle East.”

“How do you know so much this?”

“Ancient history is fascinating. Why do you think I was so interested in all the monoliths and stones we came across?”

She’d abandoned her love of history to become a cop, which was now thrown aside. Maybe she could return to both someday? She still wanted to be a cop, but it wasn’t nearly as important to her as it once was now that she was involved in a war.

I could still be a cop, right? Right?

It shocked her to realize she didn’t want to be one any more. In the grand scheme of things, including everything she’d found out about herself, it just didn’t seem important. She wasn’t sure what she was now or what she wanted to be. The only thing she did know was that she wanted to protect her loved ones.

She smiled, realizing that she actually already was a police officer of sorts, only one that dealt with supernatural threats. She’d become one slowly ever since her first meeting with the Jared shapeshifter in the park. She was a soldier, a warrior, but in her heart, a cop—someone who cared and wanted to protect.

I’m a supernatural cop.

Just like Gable Trent.

Jared pointed toward the ziggurat. “That’s where Trent is.”

“How can you tell from so far away?” Clover asked. I am not like Gable Trent. “Even your sense of smell isn’t that good.”

“Can’t you sense it?” he asked. He shuddered. “I can. Evil has its own...aura. I’m surprised the people here can stand it.” Jared shuddered again. “But
