ATLAS

After thirty minutes of lying, staring at the wall, Atlas realised she should probably get up and ready. The faint rustlings of paper and tape downstairs led her to believe the rest of the group was getting on with their last-minute gift wrappings and preparation. She felt satisfied with herself that she’d gotten all of her Christmas jobs out of the way before she arrived at her mother’s house. She’d even gone as far as to hide all of the gifts in the back shed that only she had the keys to, just in case anyone decided they were going to go snooping around.

As she went to sit up, a heavy weight on her chest pulled her right back down to the bed. Cammi. How had she forgotten their little movie night that’d started with Cammi almost screaming and crying about wanting to watch this movie she and Remi had grown up with, and ended with Cammi falling asleep only ten minutes into it. She laid back down, readjusting herself to make sure she was comfortable, whilst also ensuring that Cammi didn’t move. She pressed her cheek against soft curls and let them run through her fingers lazily, taking in the silence and sheer bless of the cosy Christmas Eve morning.

Oh, Christmas Eve. These past days had gone by so fast, she couldn’t actually believe it was Christmas already. To think, just a few days ago she had no idea where she stood with Cammi, she had no idea if there was anything romantic going on between them at all- at least on Cammi’s side of things, and now here she was, cuddled up in bed with her maybe-girlfriend or maybe-best friend that kisses her sometimes, surrounded by all of the people she loved the most, and knew she loved her too. She couldn’t see how it could ever get better than this.

She let herself steal a few more moments of warmth, before disappearing out of the room, moving the slowest she’d ever done before in fear of waking Cammi up before she could pull off her little morning treat.

Atlas had to admit, as she flicked on the kettle and grabbed the ingredients from the array of cupboards in the kitchen, this year had turned out much better than she’d thought it would. Choosing to go to university was a shot in the dark for her- she hadn’t even considered it until her final year of college. Staying in places, and being tied down had never really been her thing. She liked to have freedom to move and grow, and uni always seemed like it’d be something that held her back, didn’t let her reach her full potential. Midway through her final year she said fuck it, and filled out all of the applications anyway. The worst that could happen was that she didn’t get in…but the best that could happen, well. She was living that right now.

When she thought about everyone who’d ever walked through her front door, all of them were different.
