Wyrding Ways

Daily Gratitude Practice

The best way to practice sacred reciprocity is to give thanks. This exercise will walk you through a simple gratitude practice that you can do every morning when you awake and every evening before bed. If you can do this outside, great; if not, indoors will be just fine.

You will need:

Five to ten minutes of undisturbed time-space

A special incense to burn

A candleFace the Sun. While standing or sitting in a meditative posture, close your eyes; take a few slow, deep belly-breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth. Take a couple of minutes to breathe, feel into your body, and relax. Light your incense. Slowly and mindfully bow with your hands in prayer mudra at your heart and say, “Greetings Sun! It’s so nice to see you again! Thank you for rising today. Thank you for bringing your life, light, warmth, energy, and love into this world. Thank you for reminding me of my own life, light, warmth, energy, and love. Thank you for being a shining example of how to show up—how to be myself. May I carry your sweet medicine into the world with me today and every day, and may I remember to see the light in others. Thank you for your life and thank you for my life! Blessed be!”

Bring your awareness to the Earth around and under you and say, “Thank you, Earth. Thank you for your life—for the food I eat, the water I drink, the air I breathe, and the shelter you provide. Thank you for your ever-giving, ever-holding, wise love. Without you, I wouldn’t be here—we are interwoven, you and I. Thank you for this body-mind, which is one with you. Thank you for my life; may I remember our oneness as I live it! And may I bring your sweet medicine into the world with me today and every day.”

Bring your awareness to the Moon. Face it if you can see it. Feel the coming and going of each wave as the moon circles you. Say, “Thank you, Moon, for your life. And thank you for life. Without you, there would be no life on Earth. Thank you for your many teachings of emotionality, change, fluidity, awareness, beauty, and magic. May your soft, moonlight consciousness illuminate the dark places within psyche. May I carry your sweet medicine into the world with me today and every day.”

Take a few slow, deep breaths and mindfully and deeply bow with your hands together at your heart. Feel into your gratitude for the moment.

At the end of your day, before you go to bed, light a candle on your altar, slowly bow, and while standing or sitting down in front of it in a meditative posture, close your eyes; take a few slow, deep belly-breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth. Take a couple of minutes to breathe, feel into your body, and relax. Light your incense and say, “Thank you for this day! Thanks
