“Maybe we have to go down there,” Ruby said. “It only appeared when Brooke was above the water.”

“That’s true.” I nodded. “Fuck. Looks like the spears aren’t going to work if we’re just waiting around up here. It’s time to break out my water dragon.”

“Yes!” Brooke hissed. “That would be perfect! I can come under and fight with you.”

“The others can stay up high,” I said. “Use your weapons if you see the tiniest part of this bastard coming above the surface.”

“Got it.” Cyra nodded. “This is a hell of a start to the maze.”

“This god wasn’t fucking around,” I sighed.

I took a step back to give myself room as I focused on my water dragon form. The ripple of blue scales took over my body, and I felt a rush of comforting coldness prickle at my limbs. My spine stretched out as my legs became a powerful mass of pure muscle.

The gills on my neck flapped slightly, and my pointed tail whipped behind me, ready to dive.

“I looove this form!” Brooke squealed. “So blue and pretty!”

“I’m going in,” I said. “Stay here away from the entrance, okay?”

“No.” Brooke frowned. “You’re not going down alone. In case you forgot, I’m an amazing swimmer. I can help!”

“She has to go in.” Cyra nodded. “We’re here to help, Ryan.

Use our skills, don’t put yourself in danger all alone like this.”

Brooke folded her arms seriously, and I could tell they weren’t going to let this one go.

“Okay,” I sighed. “But I’m going to attack this fucker first, and you only help if you really have to. If it comes anywhere near you, then use your spear. Even if the venom washes off, it’ll–”

“It won’t,” Nisha cut in. “Fianna said it doesn’t wash off of anything once it’s applied.”

“Damn, that’s intense,” I muttered. “But okay, that helps us. So, Brooke, if it comes to it, I want you to stab the shark–”

“Right in the face,” Brooke said firmly. “I’ve met dangerous sharks before. I can handle this.”

She gripped her new weapon tightly and tucked her curls behind her ears. I felt a rush of pride at how fiercely she was willing to fight beside me, and I glanced back down at the dark water.

“Ready to go?” I asked, and the water angel nodded.

“Stab it the second it nears you,” I said. “There’s no room for mistakes. Keep your spear poised and ready, and fly out if you have to.”

Brooke gripped her weapon and looked down with determination as I leaned over to the entrance. It had been a while since I had used my water form, but it felt as natural as any of my other bodies. The water called to me as it lapped below, and I nodded at the angels before I dove down into it.

Cold liquid consumed me as my gills instantly adapted my breathing. My powerful legs treaded the water as I scanned around for signs of the shark.

I spotted it lurking below in circles, but it didn’t move until Brooke elegantly dove down to join me.
