âMaybe we have to go down there,â Ruby said. âIt only appeared when Brooke was above the water.â
âThatâs true.â I nodded. âFuck. Looks like the spears arenât going to work if weâre just waiting around up here. Itâs time to break out my water dragon.â
âYes!â Brooke hissed. âThat would be perfect! I can come under and fight with you.â
âThe others can stay up high,â I said. âUse your weapons if you see the tiniest part of this bastard coming above the surface.â
âGot it.â Cyra nodded. âThis is a hell of a start to the maze.â
âThis god wasnât fucking around,â I sighed.
I took a step back to give myself room as I focused on my water dragon form. The ripple of blue scales took over my body, and I felt a rush of comforting coldness prickle at my limbs. My spine stretched out as my legs became a powerful mass of pure muscle.
The gills on my neck flapped slightly, and my pointed tail whipped behind me, ready to dive.
âI looove this form!â Brooke squealed. âSo blue and pretty!â
âIâm going in,â I said. âStay here away from the entrance, okay?â
âNo.â Brooke frowned. âYouâre not going down alone. In case you forgot, Iâm an amazing swimmer. I can help!â
âShe has to go in.â Cyra nodded. âWeâre here to help, Ryan.
Use our skills, donât put yourself in danger all alone like this.â
Brooke folded her arms seriously, and I could tell they werenât going to let this one go.
âOkay,â I sighed. âBut Iâm going to attack this fucker first, and you only help if you really have to. If it comes anywhere near you, then use your spear. Even if the venom washes off, itâllââ
âIt wonât,â Nisha cut in. âFianna said it doesnât wash off of anything once itâs applied.â
âDamn, thatâs intense,â I muttered. âBut okay, that helps us. So, Brooke, if it comes to it, I want you to stab the sharkââ
âRight in the face,â Brooke said firmly. âIâve met dangerous sharks before. I can handle this.â
She gripped her new weapon tightly and tucked her curls behind her ears. I felt a rush of pride at how fiercely she was willing to fight beside me, and I glanced back down at the dark water.
âReady to go?â I asked, and the water angel nodded.
âStab it the second it nears you,â I said. âThereâs no room for mistakes. Keep your spear poised and ready, and fly out if you have to.â
Brooke gripped her weapon and looked down with determination as I leaned over to the entrance. It had been a while since I had used my water form, but it felt as natural as any of my other bodies. The water called to me as it lapped below, and I nodded at the angels before I dove down into it.
Cold liquid consumed me as my gills instantly adapted my breathing. My powerful legs treaded the water as I scanned around for signs of the shark.
I spotted it lurking below in circles, but it didnât move until Brooke elegantly dove down to join me.
