Chapter

Twenty-Three

Taza was delighted with the results of the elementals’ attack against the elven capital. He would have been happier if the pointy-eared near-immortals had suffered a staggering loss of life as well, but he had to admit that killing an immortal was almost impossible. The destruction of so much of their city would shock the elven nation to the core, and they would now understand what it meant to defy him. As the vampire lord stood at the edge of his font, a mere thought along with the aid of his Staff called to the fire elemental. It appeared in the dark viscous fluid that filled the stone receptacle. Taza stared into its swirling depths, smiling at the flaming mystical creature.

“You have fulfilled my request. The elves are in disarray.”

“The battle, however, has cost me, killing many of my kind,” the elemental replied gravely.

“That’s unfortunate, but not my concern. Who would have thought the water sprites would come to the elves’ defense?”

The elemental flared in rage. “Curse those haughty sprites! They take unmitigated pride in destroying my kind. What of our bargain?”

Taza smiled. “As I promised, I have created a new volcano home for you and your ilk, and I will transport you to your new habitat when you are ready.”

The elemental’s visage showed no expression. “Show me.”

Taza drew intricate flaming designs in the air. The lines of the spell shone so brightly that it blinded him until he appeared on a snow-covered peak, deep within the Calderan Mountains, directly south of the Dragon’s Teeth. Moments later the huge fire elemental appeared. It did not touch the ground. Instead, the flames seemed to hover mere inches above the rocky surface, melting the snow for hundreds of feet in all directions.

“Where is the promised volcano for my children?”

The undead warlock laughed. “You should know better than I that there hasn’t been an active volcano in this area for eons.”

The fire elemental raged, but its size shrank. “You lied. I have been drawn into a trap.”

Taza nodded breezily and as the elemental raged, he magically lifted a huge mound of snow and ice from a surrounding peak and dropped it atop the beast, forcing it from the air to the ground. The freezing powder and chunks melted its shell and it flowed away, revealing a much-diminished being. Uttering the words of another spell, the warlock harnessed the clouds above, collecting all the moisture within the diaphanous effects of the sky. The fire elemental was just able to spit out a final summoning spell to its children before a wave of water poured down on it.

Taza strolled over to the blackened crisp of the creature and sneered. “You bargained with death when you should have given aid without expecting compensation.”

He drove the butt of the Staff of Adois into the fire elemental, draining its remaining power. What was left of the monster’s essence surged up to replenish
