Chapter 20

Austin

For about the millionth time, Clive scolds me for being on my phone instead of paying attention to the meeting. Ryan is paying attention and is catching on super quick, so I don’t see why I need to pay too close attention.

From the second I walked into work this morning, Clive could tell I was on cloud nine.

“I take it things went well with your lady,” Clive comments, noticing the extra bounce in my step and the shit-eating grin on my face. He still doesn’t think that I should be going back to Violet’s place every night but doesn’t comment when I tell him Violet enjoyed my company the previous night.

My smug grin gets wider when she agrees to a date this weekend.

“Ok, lover boy, you are right so far. Apparently, she’s just as obsessive as you are,” Clive says, handing me a stack of files. “Now, you have a meeting to get to. That government contract is here and you were pretty excited about this one when you started looking into it.”

I sigh and follow Clive into the meeting room where I am happy to see Ryan already looking over the files and discussing them with the representative the government sent over. Ryan isn’t the most social of guys, he tends to be better with numbers and tech than people. I like seeing him making an effort to socialize, it is part of the job after all. He has to make the clients happy.

I sit down and everyone looks at me to start the meeting. There are a couple assistants sitting around the edge of the room taking notes. The number of people in the room tends to dictate how big a project is going to be. This was fortunately going to be a big one.

“What have we got?” I ask the room. Several people start talking at once but Ryan holds up a hand. The room quiets and I smile to myself. Ryan is quiet and keeps to himself but the kid is as big as a house, he doesn’t look like your typical tech nerd, not that I do either. With size like his, when Ryan wants people to listen, they do.

“They like our programming but would like to sample it, contract it out for a few small jobs then bigger ones when it works like they want.”

Ryan sums up what they want quite clearly. It isn’t our usual style to let clients test out our technology but getting a government contract will be great for the company. It will put a lot of work on Ryan but I think he can handle it.

I lean back in my chair. “What kind of small jobs would you like to test it on?” I ask.

“We have a lot of intel, you claim this program can sort the intel and give us the conclusions we need to make quick arrests. We would like to try it out on some open cases we have, small ones.”

I chuckle a little and I hear Ryan does too.
