GIVING WHAT WE HAVE

Once we ask, God will likely turn the tables. What do we have to give? He’ll probably tell us to get to work and to use our resources as part of the solution. Yet God typically isn’t asking us to risk everything. He’s asking us—like the widow—to start with what we have.

It’s easy to focus on what we don’t have. I don’t have financial security. I don’t have a husband to support me. I don’t have an advanced degree. I don’t have respect in the community. I don’t have resources or position. My house is empty.

Yet when we focus on what we have to give, everything changes. It’s not up to us anymore, it’s up to God. Like the widow, we put our oil on the table. Like the little boy, we reach into our pockets and give Jesus our lunch. No, it’s not much. But it doesn’t have to be. In giving God what we have, we don’t refuse the work God puts before us. It doesn’t matter if the work is beneath us. It doesn’t matter if it’s not what we had in mind. Pouring oil into empty jugs doesn’t make any sense. But God is in the business of starting small and going big—which sometimes means starting by opening up the cupboard.
