* * * *

Deputy Isaac Hadfield spotted the maroon sedan he’d been looking for. A resident had called into the station complaining about a car that was parked in front of her house. She said she hadn’t seen anyone come or go, but there was a No Parking sign posted on her tree lawn.

Isaac pulled in behind the maroon sedan and got out. He pressed the mic resting on his shoulder. “Ten twenty-three, dispatch.” Arrived on scene.

“Copy that,” Lindsey said.

Lindsey was still learning the police codes, and Blade had insisted his deputies use them so she could become more familiar, but in Isaac’s opinion, Lindsey had had them mastered.

Almost.

It also helped that she had a cheat sheet at her desk.

He rattled off the license plate number. “They’re New York plates. I need a ten twenty-eight.” Vehicle registration information.

The line was silent for a moment. Then Lindsey said in a frustrated tone, “Drat. I was trying to be all professional, but I don’t know the code for ‘give me a minute to run the information.’”

Isaac chucked. She really was adorable. “I’m gonna take a peek inside. Just radio me back when you find out who it’s registered to.”

“Copy that.”

He grinned as he dropped his hand and sauntered over to the Nissan Maxima. It was a newer model with a cream interior that was as clean as a whistle. He didn’t see even a gum wrapper, bottle of water, or cell phone charger.

“The car is registered to Morrison Kovach.”

“Ten four,” Isaac said. “I’ll need you to send a tow truck.”

“I’ll call Rusty,” Lindsey said. “Glad he opened up for business.”

Rusty Rimes was the new mechanic in town. He’d opened shop yesterday. Lindsey was right. It was perfect timing.

Isaac glanced across the street at Lewis’s house and wondered if this unfamiliar car had anything to do with the baker.

He narrowed his eyes when a curtain on the second floor fell back into place. Isaac turned, acting casual as he slipped into his patrol car. Instead of radioing Lindsey, he used his cell phone to call Blade.

“I just spotted someone inside Lewis’s home.”

“You wait for me,” Blade said. “I’m on my way.”

Isaac tossed his phone aside and glanced back at the house. He was tempted to storm in and arrest whoever it was, but he wouldn’t disobey a direct order.

But when he did get inside, he would take the bastard down.
