Wolfe
As predicted, Nicole had ditched me when it came to being real.
Iâd offered to take her on a date, for fucks sake, and what did she do?
My stomach sank.
Everyone was fucking fake.
I couldnât depend on anyone.
Her dad had looked at me like I was shit on his shoe. He hated me because my dad married his ex-wifeânot my fucking problem.
But Nicole?
What a waste of my fucking time.
I drove aimlessly, my anger spiraling out of control as each mile ticked away on the dash. My dad was tired of me, my mom cared more for drugs than me, and now Nicole was embarrassed to be with me.
Well, fuck her.
I drove until the sky darkened, pulling over by a store with the view to getting blind drunk. It was either that, or I hurt someoneâand I didnât need to get arrested today.
Imagine everyoneâs reaction to that.
Disappointment.
Disgust.
Embarrassment.
I didnât care, but a small, Nicole-shaped part of me did.
Slamming the car door behind me, I strode into the store with a taste for tequila. Iâd drink until I couldnât see and then sleep in the car.
This must be what Mom feels like.
I stopped, closing my eyes.
No. Mom is an addict. Youâre not an alcoholic. Youâre not addicted.
Still.
Casting a glance around me, I realized I was in the poor part of town.
A kid watched me from the house across the road, his eyes wide. His skin was dirty; his t-shirt faded beyond belief. He mustâve been ten or eleven years old.
âNice car,â the kid yelled, nodding at my car.
âThanks.â I held his gaze. âI worked hard for it.â
Have ambition, kid. Donât be like me.
The kid gaped at me.
âAre you famous?â
Infamous, more like.
âNah. I work hard.â
âMy mom works. She works hard, and she doesnât have a car.â The kid frowned. âMaybe she needs to work harder, huh?â
My heart broke for the little guy.
âMaybe when youâre older, you can buy her one with all your money,â I suggested, deciding against the store.
âYou got a wife?â
I snorted.
âNo, buddy. No wife.â
I would, one day, if she would admit how she fucking felt for me to the world.
âOh.â The kid looked disappointed. âDo you have a dog?â
I sighed, feeling decidedly worse with each question.
âIâve got nothing,â I admitted, pulling my door open.
âBut youâve got a nice car.â
I nodded.
âYeah. See you around, kid.â
I slid into the seat, leaning back against the seat.
What had Nicoleâs dad said to me?
âDonât come near my daughter again, or Iâll make sure you rot in jail.â
Why was Nicole so fucking scared of everyone knowing she was mine?
Not everyone. Her family. My family.
I turned the car around, speeding away from the kid with wide eyes.
âFuck this.â
I smiled, knowing exactly what I needed to do.
