Friday really sucked. I had never found myself so unfocused at school—not even after Josh and I had started dating. That was the reason I looked forward to my shift at Harrison Sport’s on Saturday even more. Standing at the counter would allow me to indulge in my thoughts as long as no customer needed my help.

Today I wasn’t able to calm my mind, although I stared at the blackboards with a steady, empty gaze. All day long I struggled not to think about what Josh was doing. Was he asleep? Did he have enough to eat? Or did he have to remain transformed during the day too?

I realized I knew next to nothing about werewolves. I had no idea if Josh's condition was a curse or a disease and what it was like to be a werewolf. Did his transformation hurt? Did he feel the pain of his battles? I now mulled over questions that had either never occurred to me or had simply been too unpleasant to burden our few hours together with. However, his call from yesterday had made it ungraciously clear that I was suppressing an important part of Josh's life. I didn't believe there was a cure, so the shadow of the werewolves would always accompany us.

It all raised the question about how a gray, barren cosmic rock without its own light could have such an effect on creatures on earth. I'd probably never know. Instead, I’d have to get used to the fact that sometimes Josh transforms when the full moon approaches. It should be a simple task, really.

After our unexpected meeting in the woods a month ago, there should have been nothing left that would shock me. Still, I just couldn't shake off the unease from his call yesterday. It left a heavy lump in the pit of my stomach and a restlessness that couldn’t be shaken.
