Chapter 9

Millie trotted along behind Ulrich, keeping to the shadows and avoiding the overhead security cameras. She knew damned well she’d not relax until they were back in the Land Rover and at least a hundred miles north of this place.

In a pouch hung around Ulrich’s neck was a thumb drive carrying the disgusting records that had been kept on her daughter. Millie had tried to read a few of the files as they downloaded and she erased them off the main computer, but the content had sickened her.

Ric had followed after her, uploading a special code Luc had emailed to him, one that should totally wipe all traces of Manda’s information from the system and any other that might try to access this one.

Hidden within the operating files, it should remain active yet totally undetectable while it insured that any records on Manda Smith, under all her code names, would soon be nothing more than inaccessible bits of unconnected binary code.

She and Ulrich had done all they could.

Now Millie just wanted to go home. Or to Montana. Wherever. It didn’t really matter, so long as it was far away from here.

One man lay dead in the main office, but he’d deserved to die and she felt a small sense of justice, that she had helped avenge her daughter’s horrible life. Another man, a security guard, had escaped, but from what Ulrich could sense of his mind, he didn’t have a clue about the Chanku or shapeshifters. He merely thought they’d been attacked by rabid dogs.

So be it. All in all, it had been a very productive visit.

Granted, there might still be files on laptops that weren’t at the laboratory, but with Luc’s Trojan, the moment those computers accessed the main file, the information would be compromised. For now, it looked as if they had everything from the main files that proved Manda’s existence. The photos Millie discovered in a locked cabinet in one of the offices had burned quite nicely.

Others had gone through the shredder.

The images she’d seen would stay with her for a long time. Poor Manda! To think her beautiful daughter, once such a pathetic freak of nature, had been treated so obscenely. It was wrong.

Dead wrong.

Which was probably why the death of the one scientist they’d encountered didn’t bother Millie one bit. He’d known who they were, what they were.

He’d known Manda.

Even though he’d realized there was a sensitive, intelligent young woman beneath the horribly disfigured body, he’d still treated her like a lab rat.

Worse, in fact. Even rats had more rights.

Millie had recognized him in some of the photos and realized he’d been the one in charge of the lab when Manda was there. He’d orchestrated so much of her horrible life and had followed Milton Bosworth’s despicable directions without question. He’d even tried a few disgusting things on his own, in the name of science, according to his records.

She was only sorry Ulrich had been the one to kill him. Millie had never killed before, but it would have been easy to make an exception for that particular beast.
