When Blenkin asked the obvious question, why a boat had not been lowered to pick up the bodies, Moore said, first, that he had lady passengers on board and didn’t wish to alarm them, and second, that the cargo had shifted, giving the ship a slight list so that, in the heavy seas running, it would have been dangerous to bring her to.

After returning ashore, Blenkin reported the substance of the interview both to his newspaper and to Sir David Graaf, Colonial Secretary. At first this new evidence was accepted without question, but when he saw his statements in print, Moore began to back down. Blenkin immediately suspected that there was more behind the captain’s retreat than mere doubt.

On board the Insizwa [he wrote] was someone in authority in the company that owned the vessel who immediately realized that if Captain Moore persisted in his statement both he (the captain) and the steamer would be held up and the service of the line disorganized by the compulsory attendance of himself and some of the crew at the Cape enquiry which had been forecasted.
