Once situated inside the coffee shop with tacos from Marta’s favorite food truck, they settled in for a well-deserved break. Marta purposely picked a table near the large picture window in the front near the green plants. She even picked off dead leaves, much to Shanice’s amusement.

“Since I’m on leave from work,” Shanice said, “I want to figure out where I’m living before I tackle where I’m working. I can’t drive anymore, and public transportation is so hit and miss, and with this—” She smacked both armrests with her hands. “This thing will make it even more dicey.”

“I get that,” Marta said.

“Yeah, once I’m settled and moved in somewhere, then I’m thinking about asking them if I can work from home. Wherever that is, it has to have good WIFI, though. I mean, I could go into the office now and then, I suppose.”

“Maybe somebody from work could pick you up on those days,” Marta offered. Or I could drive you, she thought in her head.

“Maybe.” Shanice scowled.

“What’s wrong?” Marta put down her half-eaten taco. “Are you in pain?”

“No, I just realized that I have to figure out where to send my mail. I don’t think it’ll get forwarded to Louisville because my last name isn’t Clark, but maybe I can pick it up from the people that buy the house.”

“Forward it to my house for now,” Marta said quickly.

“No, I couldn’t—”

“Sure, you can,” Marta interrupted. “Until you have another option. I’ll safeguard it and make sure you get it. No fuss. No muss.”

Shanice was silent for a moment and then said, “You truly are my superhero, aren’t you?”

Marta didn’t have a chance to answer because a certain tall redheaded proprietor sidled up to their table.

“You’re back,” Rikki said to Marta. “Marta, right?”

Marta nodded.

“How’s the injury?”

Marta held up her formerly injured hand. “Good as new.” That was kind of a lie because there were tiny scars from the glass, but who cared.

“And this must be the woman you risked life and limb for.”

Shanice giggled and hid her smile behind her hand.

“I’m Rikki.”

Shanice shook the offered hand and said, “I’m Shanice, and I’ve never been here before. I mean, I’ve walked by the outside. But I love it in here. So welcoming.”

“Thanks,” Rikki said with a smile that lit up her entire face. “Coffee’s on me. Don’t forget.”

“Thank you,” Marta said. “That’s very generous of you. We’ll be sure to get to-go cups on the way out.”

They made a bit more small talk, and as soon as Rikki left and was out of earshot, Shanice burst out laughing. “Marta, you have that whole pile of dead leaves on your napkin. She saw them. She knew you were picking her plants.”

Marta bugged out her eyes. “Oh, shit. Well, she didn’t ban us, and she’s giving us free coffees, so I think we’re off the hook.”

A wave of pain crossed Shanice’s face.

“Now you’re in pain,” Marta said matter-of-factly. “Tell me.”

“I’m okay,” Shanice said, clearly lying.

“Listen, I’m not good at that Bullshit game, but even I can tell you’re bullshitting me right now.
