Steam engines can be used to power trains, or trucks, or ships, or even machines that stand still and make things in factories.
They run on coal and water. The coal is used to make a fire, which heats the water up, and this creates steam which is piped into a cylinder and powers a piston, which goes backwards and forwards and makes the wheels turn.
