Chapter Seventeen

The mouth-watering aromas of basil fried rice, chicken pad Thai, and spring rolls filled the kitchen as she removed everything from the takeout bag while Cade brought plates and utensils to the table. Van took Tyler and Riley out to dinner after the tux fitting, leaving the two of them alone in the house.

“You want something to drink?” Cade asked.

“I’d love a glass of white wine.” After all she went through these last few days, she could use a drink.

“Sorry. There’s no alcohol in the house.”

Oh, yeah. Hadn’t he mentioned something about a month-long bender? Was Cade a recovering alcoholic? Had she upset him by asking? “Oh, I’m sorry. Water’s fine.”

“You don’t have to apologize. It’s just better if I stay away from the booze for a while. At least until I learn better coping skills.”

“Do you want to talk about it?” She kept her voice soft.

He brought two glasses of tap water to the table, before sitting down to eat. “Actually, there’s something else I’d rather talk about. How would you feel about being my plus one at Brielle and Luke’s wedding?”

She’d love to go to a wedding with Cade. She had a great time this afternoon talking to his siblings and their significant others, especially Riley, a tough, kick ass woman with an amazing story of courage. She divorced her emotionally and physically abusive husband, and started her own karate school in town to empower others. “Oh, I don’t think it’s a good idea to be around all those people.”

“All those people are my family, and you’ve been around half of them all day. They’re fine. It’ll give you something to do.”

“What if someone recognizes me and posts a picture on social media?”

“My sister’s fiancé is a movie star. They’re having a private ceremony with just family and a few friends. Cell phones will be collected at the door to prevent the temptation of taking and posting pictures.”

That sounded safe enough. And it’s not like anyone outside of the ballet world would even know her name. Van, Tyler, and Riley knew not to tell anyone about her. Plus Cade would keep her safe. There really wasn’t anything to worry about. “I don’t have a dress.”

“There’s a boutique in town. I’m sure you can find something there.”

“I don’t have access to my money right now.”

“I’ll spot you the cash.”

Wasn’t a lack of funds the reason she was staying at his house and not a hotel in the first place?

She’d been living on her own since she accepted a company position after college graduation seven years ago. Accepting money from anyone made her stomach knot up. Accepting it from Cade, who was clearly struggling financially, weighed on her heart as well. “Don’t max out your credit cards because of me.”

“I’m not. I’ve got access to some cash. Don’t worry about that.”

“Then I don’t have any more excuses.”

“No, you don’t. And now that you’re coming to the wedding, you’ve saved me from my mother’s matchmaking schemes.”

“Ah, so that’s the real reason you invited me.
