“He’s really here?”

“That’s what we said,” Charley answered. “Still sure you want to meet him?”

Camo Pants looked warily at Puka (aka Dirk, aka Dirk the Jerk). “I thought they made him up.”

“They did make him up!” Puka (aka Dirk, aka Dirk the Jerk) insisted desperately.

Charley and Oona just shrugged and smiled at each other knowingly.

“You made him up,” Puka (aka Dirk, aka Dirk the Jerk) tried again. “Both of you.”

At that moment, an announcement came over the PA system:

“Hi, everybody. I’m here with Billy Russo, who’s looking for his friend Dirk. Dirk, could you please come meet Billy at the help desk right away.”

“No way …” Camo Pants said quietly as the color drained from his face. The other two convenience store aggro-bros started backing away slowly toward the door.

“Nah.” Puka (aka Dirk, aka Dirk the Jerk) shook his head violently. “Nah. I still don’t buy it.” He pointed a shaky finger at the girls. “You’re … you’re lying. There is no Billy Russo!”

“Excuse me, sir? Is your name Dirk?”

Puka (aka Dirk, aka Dirk the Jerk) turned slowly toward the two security guards. “Yes?”

“Oh, great. Look, we have a situation here. Billy is really losing it. Can you come with us, please?”

All four of the convenience store aggro-bros were through the doors and into the parking lot somewhere between “with” and “us.”

The two guards watched blankly. Then one of them said, “Maybe we should just give the kid his stupid dollar.”
