Honor
There was no time to discuss the mark Iâd left on Branok. We kissed again, he muttered that weâd have much to discuss when I came back. He clung to my wrist for a second, my bangles sliding under his fingertips, until he finally released me. It was the only sign that it hurt for me to go.
The dragon Knights were camped out in front of the hallway to the basement. They had spread through the castle at the Academy, supposedly here to provide extra security after the attempted assassination. But I knew the bitter truth.
Calla helpfully ran around the other side of the hall and let out a scream. The two dragon knights on duty glanced toward her, then immediately called in reinforcements. They werenât stupid; they knew someone was trying to distract them.
The two other guards came running a moment later, hands on the pommels of their swords. I winced, worried Calla would be caught, but she was already gone; maids knew how to disappear into the background.
And so the indistractible knights were all together when I rolled Branokâs gas dice.
The gas quickly overtook them all, the guards exchanging confused looks before they tumbled to the ground in heaps. The gas wouldn't kill them.
I murmured the words of the spell to prevent us being affected by the gas, and each of my friends did in turn as well, nodding. We slipped past the sleeping knights. I turned back to my friends and told them, âI have it from here.â
âHonor,â Callaâs face was etched with worry. Then she just grabbed me and hugged me. âI know itâs pointless to argue with you. But for godsâ sake, be careful.â
âPromise,â I said. âYou too. This place is a hell hole.â
I ran down the stairs to the basement. Arren was still asleep, sprawled across the floor of his cage; his snores seemed to shake the basement.
He startled awake as I came near, his eyes going wide and wild. I reached through the bars to rest my hand on Arrenâs head. My fingers were shaking. I pressed them together hard, and hoped he didn't notice.
I didn't want him to feel my fear. I didnât want the beast to sense weakness. But most of all, I imagined how much it would hurt the man inside to know that I was afraid of him.
He started to freak out, and I quieted him.
I'd been worried about how I would keep up with Arren. I tried to tell him, âI can get you to the rest of the Scourge. But you have to let me stay with you.â
I climbed onto his shoulders. I clung to him.
Together, the two of us rocketed off through the corridors.
