Cubic invited Kyle for a late lunch so that they could eat and then go to the meeting together.

It was still raining outside, and they took one of the golf carts, which all had awnings over the tops. Kyle again worried about running into Briana, unsure of how she would react to what he’d done—but she was not in the Deli.

Kyle found that he had almost no appetite but forced himself to eat a ham sandwich anyway. As soon as he’d nervously wolfed it down his stomach started gurgling.

At 2:45, when they climbed back into another golf cart and headed for the Cathedral, Kyle finally asked the question that had been on his mind since last night, one that he’d hoped that Cubic would have answered without him having to bring it up.

“What exactly is the purpose of this tribunal?”

Cubic glanced at Kyle. “You mean the possible outcomes?”

“Well, yeah.”

“There’s only one punishment at Evergreen.”

“What’s that?” Kyle asked nervously.

“The deprivation tank.”

Kyle was confused. “You mean sensory deprivation?”

Cubic laughed. “You wish.” He guided the golf cart around a corner. “The deprivation tank is a metal box buried two hundred feet under the Security building in solid rock—three inch steel walls, ceiling, and floor. They put you in it before Renewal and keep you there three, four, five, six hours—whatever the punishment is.”

“Jesus,” Kyle said. So much for Utopia.

Cubic said grimly. “If there’s a Hell on earth, the D-tank is it. At least, it is for us greens.”

He turned another corner and they pulled up beside the Cathedral.

Before they got out, Kyle said, “Have you ever been—”

“I don’t want to talk about it.”
