Chapter 13
Amber
"Amber... Amber... Amber..."
The voice was like a whisper in the wind, barely audible yet so very insistent.
Feeling drowsy, I opened my eyes. The room came into view before me, and it took a couple of moments for me to remember what had happened.
When it all came back to me, it felt like a wave crashing me against the sandy coast. The bad room. The good room. Olivier. Bruno.
I sat up with a scream already dying on my lips.
"Amber, Amber! Miss Jonathan, it's okay, it's only me."
Startled, I looked into Fleur's eyes. She was sitting in an armchair next to my bed, gently patting my hand.
"It's okay," she told me, her voice sweet and gentle. "It's all okay. I just... I brought you something."
I nodded, swallowing the lump in my throat. My mouth was dry, and I desperately needed a drink of water. The feeling of nausea was overwhelming.
"You look so very pale," Fleur said, running a wet rag over my forehead. "Oh, Amber, I'm so worried about you."
"I'll be fine," I croaked. "What did you want to bring me?"
"Look here," she said, her face fearful as she handed me a parcel. "Another one... It was waiting here when I came."
I looked at the package in her hands. It looked the same as the one that had come before, the one with Camellia's collar and perfume. My hands shook as I took it from her, slowly unwrapping the bow and watching the box like it was filled with poison and snakes.
"Oh, Fleur, I can't bear it," I managed. "You open it... Please."
Fleur took the package in her hands. It was only then that I noticed her perfectly manicured hands. It seemed so odd for a woman who was a maid.
"I opened it," she said, her eyes guiltily finding mine. "I had to, Amber... I was worried it was dangerous, that something bad was inside."
I furrowed my brows but didn't call her out on opening what was meant for me. After all, she was right - it could have been something dangerous.
I opened the package myself, letting out a shocked gasp when I discovered its grisly insides.
"Take it away," I managed, shaking my head in disbelief. "Fleur, why... Why would you let me open that?"
The sight would haunt me forever. The insides of the box splattered with what must have been Camellia's blood, and a glass placed neatly in the center. The glass that still had a white residue on the bottom, and the trace of Camellia's pearly pink lipstick on the edge.
"I thought you'd want to see it," Fleur whispered. "I'm so sorry. I'll take it away."
"Take what away?"
We both glanced up. We'd been so caught up in our conversation, we didn't notice another person had entered my room.
Bruno stood by the door, his eyes on the package.
"Nothing," we said in unison, and Fleur hurried to close the box.
"Nothing?" he repeated as the maid got to her feet, rushing away. "I'm not sure that's true."
"I missed you." I stood up, running toward Bruno and clinging to him desperately.
