About ten minutes up the path, a dog bounds towards us out of nowhere. Itâs huge and, at first, I think itâs the one from the copperworks but it isnât. Thank God! Itâs a German shepherd, all long hair and giant paws.
âPrince!â A man comes round the corner. He sees us and waves a dog lead in the air. âSorry, boys â oh â and girl.â He grins. âHeâs friendly, honest! Just excited. Loves the river, he does.â
Prince bounds back to his owner, who tells him to sit and the dog does it straight away.
âCan I stroke him?â Jinx asks.
âYeah. He doesnât bite.â
Tam looks like he doesnât believe it. The man laughs. âThought he was the Beast of Blaengarw, did you?â
âItâs not funny,â Tam mutters under his breath. âAnimal should be on a sodding lead.â
âYou know about the Beast then?â Jinx rubs Princeâs thick chest coat.
âEveryone does round here, donât they?â He clocks our rucksacks and bedrolls. âYou camping?â
I nod.
âFunny time of year to do it.â
âItâs for our Duke of Edinburgh award.â
Jinx gives me a sneaky thumbs-up.
The man watches Catrin play with his dog. âNot looking for the Beast then?â
Jinx tries to sound casual. âDonât really know much about it, to be honest.â
âNo?â He looks pleased to be able to tell his story. âWell, last night some blokes were talking about it down The Colliers â thatâs my local â the landlordâs brotherâs got a few chickens up Blaengarw way. Well, he did have. Something was getting them â thought it was a fox. But he stayed up one night with a Thermos and a shotgun and â damn him if it wasnât a gigantic cat! Scared the living daylights out of him. Fell backwards, fired a shot into the air and scared the bugger off.â He glances at Catrin. âOh, pardon my French.â
âItâs all right,â Jinx says. âSheâs said worse.â
I elbow him. âSo, it was killing chickens?â
âYeah, should have known it wasnât a fox because it was taking them away. They found fully stripped carcasses on the field. Foxes donât do that. They kill for fun, they do.â He taps his thighs and whistles. Prince runs back to him.
âSome people think itâs a myth,â Catrin says. âThe Beast.â
âNah, must be true, mustnât it?â He strokes the dog between his massive, fluffy ears. âWhy would he lie?â
