Chapter Eleven

Kasey stepped out of the elevator onto the fourth floor and came face-to-face with Chief West. The chief looked up and stopped in his tracks.

“Kasey, it’s good to see you. I was actually coming looking for you.”

“I know, chief. I’m sorry, we got a little caught up downstairs. I meant to talk to you earlier, but time got away from us.”

The chief nodded. “Have you decided what you would like to do?”

His steely eyes seemed to bore into her soul.

“I have,” she said.

No matter how grateful she was for her old boss and everything that she had done, there were more important considerations.

Something was coming to New York City. If Kasey was to stand a chance of stopping the attack, it would be with the resources of the NYPD at her side. She couldn’t afford to run away to the OCME.

Turning a blind eye and just hoping for the best did not sit well with her at all. She’d run away from her visions before and that had got her nowhere. In fact, it almost got her killed when the assassin Danilo Lelac had come after her.

Now I’m running toward them.

“Don’t keep me waiting, Kasey. I’ve got places to be,” the Chief said.

“I want to stay,” Kasey blurted. “Don’t get me wrong, I love the OCME. Dr. Sampson was a hero to me, but I feel like the work I’m doing here with Bishop is even more important. Even now, we’re fighting to save someone’s life. I don’t know that I can ever go back to the OCME. I don’t think I would even want to. I’d love to stay here, if you will have me.”

The chief smiled. “I wouldn’t have it any other way. You and Bishop have proved unstoppable. I want to keep you two together and closing cases. We’ll have to get you transferred to the Department full-time. Officially, you will be a medical examiner working under Dr. Katri, but we’ll ensure your duties are flexible. You’ll spend most of your time as a crime scene technician working beside Bishop.

“Evans is still away on leave, and he and Bishop didn’t get along anyway. I’ll call the OCME tomorrow and let her know. As for you, carry on as you were. We can’t have Sal Langstrode killed on our watch.” The chief pressed the button for the elevator and the doors parted.

“Mind if I share your ride?” The chief asked.

“I’m just heading down to the morgue,” Kasey replied. “I may as well give Vida the good news now.”

The chief pressed the button for the ground floor. “Ah, yes, speaking of, I’ve completed the requisition process and the renovations should begin next week. We’ll have our own morgue back up and running before you know it.”

The elevator came to a halt and the doors opened. As the chief stepped off the elevator, he turned to Kasey. “Try not to destroy this one, would you? The city is really busting my balls over the repair bill.”

Kasey nodded. It was a good thing the chief had no idea just how true that statement was.
