After I excused myself and returned to my room, I knew before I opened my door that something felt off. The hair on the back of my neck stood up, and there was a tension in the air.

But I didn’t expect to see Kit sitting on my pallet looking pleased as could be with herself for surprising me.

“What are you doing in here?” I demanded, snapping the door closed behind me.

“I got tired of waiting for you to rescue me,” she said.

I gave her an incredulous look.

“I don’t need you to rescue me all the time,” she said, crossing her arms and lifting her chin.

I raised an eyebrow at her, ready to remind her of all the times she did in fact need me to rescue her.

She huffed and said, “Okay, some of the time, I’ll give you that. You’ve just been extremely lucky to catch me at several bad moments.”

“What did you do? Did they let you go?”

“Of course not,” she said, rising to her feet and stretching lazily. “I was just smarter than they were. I’ll tell you later but now, you might want to start running. It’s about to get loud in here.” She flashed a grin just as someone shouted an alarm from the room across the hall.

“What was that?”

Her eyes widened. “They must have noticed I was gone.”

“Why are you just sitting there?” I hissed at her, quickly gathering the rest of my things and shoving them into my bag.

“I thought I had more time. They left me alone.” She spoke rapidly, moving to stand with her back to the wall just left of the door, ready to attack anyone who tried to enter.

“They left you alone?”

“They thought I was asleep. Now hush.” She pressed her ear to the wall, listening to the growing commotion in the hallway. They were shouting at one another, outraged at Kit’s escape.

“We need to get out of here,” I said, racing to the window and feeling trapped. It wasn’t a long drop to the street below, but long enough to twist or break an ankle if we didn’t land just right.

“I know,” she whispered, her voice as tense as her form. She slipped two throwing stars into her right hand and drew a short dagger into her left. “We may need to split up.”

“They don’t know I’m with you.”

“Yet,” she pointed out. “They will soon enough. I’m hiding in your room.”

“Maybe you just picked a random room that happened to be mine.”

She shook her head. “You fit the description, though. Too much of a coincidence. They won’t risk letting you go.”

Everything suddenly went quiet. We weren’t alone, though. I could feel them in the hall, waiting.

“Meet me at the river,” Kit whispered, the sound barely more than a breath.

It was enough, though.

They crashed through the door with a thunderous bang, shouting, weapons brandished. Kit let her stars fly, hitting the two at the front of the pack in the gut. They paused long enough for her to slip in the hall, and I heard her footsteps pound on the wood as she tore off.
