“YOU SAID you’d text!” Ariadne told Stanley as she and Pippen scattered salt down the walkway in a panic.

“I’m sorry!” Stanley called from the fence, where Johnny had parked their SUV. “Jeremy was going to, but as soon as the road flattened out, he fell asleep and we didn’t notice.”

“I don’t blame him,” Pippen said earnestly, so glad for the snow boots that someone at Craw’s mill had loaned him that he was almost in tears. God, he’d be hurting right now if he had to depend on the pricey, useless things he’d bought at a boutique last year. “As soon as I don’t have to keep the car on the road with my mind powers, I’m out like a light too.”

Stanley, a small man with white-blond hair, merry blue eyes, and a plump little mouth, laughed appreciatively. Pippen decided he liked him—and his brooding, dark-haired, Italianate mob-land-style boyfriend who was standing by the driver’s side. The boyfriend, Johnny—who was wearing a long black wool coat and a fedora—looked like someone Pippen’s father might know, but one of the nicer men, who’d smiled at Pippen as a kid.

“You let us know when the walkway is safe,” the boyfriend said. “He’s still not a big man—I can carry him and you people can carry all the crap he has to worry about to walk.”

“Hey,” Ariadne said, taking a shovel to the residual slush on the walkway as Pippen finished with the salt. “That reminds me—has anyone thought to text Aiden? He’s going to have to finish up whatever he’s doing to get down here, and I think his mother is waiting in the wings with a casserole or twelve.”

“Well, she’s going to just have to wait,” Stanley said with a little flounce. “We brought steaks, and they’re still steaming up the back of the car.”

“Craw’s favorite place?” Ari asked as Pippen tested the walkway. “You think Jeremy’s up for that?”

“We’ll cut it into little bites,” Johnny said. “I… I think he’ll like anything, honestly. Jeremy, he’ll just want Aiden to say hello.”

Ari nodded, and Pippen gave the walkway one more hard push with his boot, relieved when the tread stuck.

“I think we’re safe,” he said. “I’ll go get the door.”

He and Ariadne had just been finishing up prepping the house, and God—if Pippen hadn’t felt horrible guilt and responsibility before, just seeing what they needed to install so the guy could go use the toilet helped him feel it now. Besides that, the house—snug and cozy, with two bedrooms and a bathroom in the upstairs and a kitchen, living room, mudroom, and bathroom in the downstairs—was so… so sweet. Aiden—who terrified Pippen when they were working, because he was big and gruff and angry—mustn’t forget angry—lived here. He lived in this place with handmade lace valances, and well-worn, rectangular, masculine doilies on the recliner. He lived in the place with the felted rug in the entryway and the rustic picture of the wolf and the rabbit on the wall. The furniture
