Chapter Six
âI asked you nicely,â Bernard said, stepping aside to let the new arrival reach the table. âPlease don't make any loud noises. They really don't like it.â
Staring in shock, Rachel was unable to take her eyes off the twisted, barely human figure that even now was struggling to take a seat. Much more waxy than the others, and with sections of her face having crumbled away, this version of Evelyn Hartmann gripped the back of the chair carefully, as if she was trying to steady herself, and then Bernard had to help her sit.
âThis was the very first recording I made of your mother,â he explained. âI played her over and over again, not really appreciating the damage that I was causing. That's when I began to produce other recordings, and I barely played this one again. I suppose, in my heart of hearts, I was always saving it for the last night. I just didn't know how things were going to end.â
He hesitated.
âI suppose I must have known that these final hours would be bittersweet,â he added. âEverything, the whole scheme, was designed to delay the loss for as long as possible. My one consolation, however, is the realization that we get to go together. I think that's how it was always meant to be.â
The figure opened its mouth and tried to speak, but strings of thick wax hung across the opening. In place of eyes, the model had merely two faint dents that hinted at dark orbs beneath the wax's surface. A faint groaning sound emerged from the back of the figure's throat, and after a moment she placed her hands on the table as if she was reaching for a knife and fork.
The music, meanwhile, was sounding worse with each passing second, barely recognizable as a tune.
âNow the family is all together,â Bernard said proudly, stepping behind the figure and placing his hands on her shoulders. Looking at Rachel, he smiled. âMy dear, I meant what I said earlier. Your mother always thought of you. You were always in her heart.â
âRachel,â the Evelyn in the red dress purred, watching her with an expression of pure love.
âMy daughter,â one of the other Evelyns gurgled.
âI always knew you'd come back,â one of the weaker Evelyns said softly, her eyes glistening as if she was about to burst into tears. âI always carried my love for you, so deep in my heart and -â
Before she could finish, the older, faded Evelyn lurched forward in her chair and let out an agonized howling sound, as strands of wax continued to cover parts of her mouth. The sound continued for several seconds, before she held a hand out toward Rachel, as if she was reaching for her.
âOne last family dinner,â Bernard said, before hitting a bell that stood on a nearby table. âWe must treasure tonight forever.â
Spotting movement, Rachel turned and saw another figure stepping into the room, and this time she was shocked by the sight of Brad making his way to the table.
