Chapter Six - The Obsidian Palace - (Eric)

Desolate and lonely, standing right in front of me was the palace I had called home for the first fifteen years of my life. The mere sight of it sent chills creeping along every inch of my skin.

Pointed arches. Towering pillars. A sea of slender towers and spires piercing the thin layers of clouds and penetrating the sky like needles. All carved out of glossy black obsidian. A bearnix and a devil were standing on one of the towers behind the battlements. Fortunately, they were too busy arguing over some matter to notice us. The bearnix was flapping its wings at the devil, who was snarling and pointing fingers at it in return.

“We’re counting on you to get us in there, Eric,” said Brian, giving me a pat on the back.

“Right. We need a plan before we do anything,” I said, looking around for good options for hideouts.

Eileen whipped out her scepter and traced it in the air. A green flower bush materialized in front of us, shielding our figures from the palace.

“They’ll notice the bush,” Helen pointed out.

“I doubt they will. There are loads of trees and bushes around here, and they’re real thick, those guards. All right, now, what’s our plan?”

“We must attack the guards without being noticed,” said Alexandria.

“Right,” agreed Helen. “But they’ve got the advantage of the upper ground. We’ll be blasted to pieces if they see us.”

“So we’ve got to kill them on our first attempt,” said Alexandria.

Helen frowned. “Must we kill them?”

“What other options do we have?”

“Let’s see,” Zack cut in hastily. “We can maim them, drive them out of the palace, put them in a coma—”

“Wait, hold on, hold on….” Brian rummaged in his knapsack and fumbled in it. “Where’s that potion? I remember putting…. Ah, here it is.” He got out two little blue vials labeled Dozing Decoction. “This’ll do the trick.”

“And how are we going to make sure they swallow the potion?” Alexandria said.

“We could put them in cupcakes or…I don’t know, sweets?” suggested Eileen. “And levitate it up to the towers?”

“Come on, wouldn’t that look too suspicious?” said Brian. “We need to fire the potions at the two guards. We’d need a launcher or a cannon.”

“No way,” said Helen. “Those things take space. And Alexandria, you haven’t mastered ice cannons, have you?”

She shook her head. “And I doubt I’ll have time to learn how. We need to break into the palace right now, immediately.”

“So we need a small cannon….” Brian closed his eyes as if sinking into meditation. “A small launcher. What about…?” He opened his eyes suddenly. “Hey, what about we make a slingshot?” Brian’s gaze swept across us, then fell on Eileen’s chintz scarf. “Perfect. All we need is that scarf and a heavy Y-shaped branch.”

“And then?” I said.

“And then we fire the two vials of potions at the guards and put them to sleep for…,” He checked the label, “two days.”

“I don’t know if this will work, Brian,” said Helen, looking worried.
