Chapter 14

Adalind

I’m disoriented at first, details a fuzzy haze around me. But as things shift and sharpen, my stomach drops and fear brushes my skin like a thousand stinging nettles.

Yorian’s room.

It’s as it was before, with every drape that had been removed back in place. Every tapestry. Every ornament. The bed that Rognar had burned. And worse; the torture cross is prominent in the center of the room, the king’s table of torture implements to one side. A brazier glows on the other, a range of brands already pushed into the hot coals.

No. No, no, no, no, no. No!

“At least you come when you are called,” a sweetly cruel voice sneers from behind me. I whirl around. Yorian! No, he’s dead. Gone! But there he is before me, tall and cruel, covered in his glittering gems as always. He continues, to my mounting horror, “That’s one good thing about peasants: so obedient.”

I blink and suddenly I’m affixed to the cross, arms and legs out in an obscene “x,” now stripped to my shift. I stifle a scream as Yorian saunters forward, hand wrapping around the handle on the biggest brand. The one he’d had made special with his coat of arms.

“Shall we see if it takes this time, peasant?” he asks, his voice even sweeter, sounding kind, even concerned, but the look in his eyes and the twisted smile on his mouth reveal his true malevolence. He draws near, the red gleam of the iron lighting us both in a bloody glow. Hell. I am in hell.

Yorian leans in, his mouth next to my ear, “I love you peasant-queen, and I love your screams even more. So give me your blessing and make me the greatest king, alright?”
