CHAPTER 8

Emotions Are Necessary

“There may be days I curl up in a blanket with my coffee and just cry. Cry because the pain of letting go is almost as painful as the initial loss.”

– S.S. Jubilee

The Emotional Rollercoaster

There’s no doubt that you’ll experience every possible human emotion on this journey. Some feelings will be easier than others to manage, and all seem to have their place and purpose, even the explosive ones. Shock, disbelief, and numbing help you to survive the initial impact of the news. This is your body’s way of protecting you until your brain has time to catch up to the reality of your loss. Each experience is different, and each person comes to terms with suicide loss in their own way. You might find yourself in and out of this state for quite a while, especially if you didn’t see your loved one on a regular basis.

Once the shock wears off, anger and despair can take over, along with intense fear and helplessness. I can’t stress enough that every feeling has its place, and none need to be avoided. The trick will be to get through each one as it presents itself, and rest as much as possible until the next wave hits. The waves will hit at random times, so you won’t always be able to prepare yourself. This is one of the reasons time in solitude is so important. The body and mind need rest to keep up with the relentless demands of grieving. Just about any feeling is possible now, so I’m going to try to address one basic emotion at a time and expand from there.
