Chapter Eleven: Loss
Hermie scooped up Chidori and held onto her with both hands as he knelt at his sisterâs side on the slick deck beneath the rain and the splashing waves.
âHestie? Can you hear me?â he shouted.
She didnât move. Had she suffered tremendous pain? Was she still in pain? Her skin looked pale and her lips blue. He wondered if her soul had already been taken to Tartarus or if it was still inside her body.
âHestie?â he said again, more urgently.
Poros fell to his knees and swept Hestie into his arms.
Hermie glanced over at Taavi, whose body had begun to desiccate and crumble into dust from the sting of the trident.
âOh, no!â Hermie cried, unable to believe his eyes.
âChidori!â Jinsoo scrambled across the rocking ship to take the limp canary from Hermie.
From the flybridge, Prometheus shouted, âPoros! I need you to fight off Poseidon while the others get below deck!â
âGuard her with your life,â Poros said before handing Hestie over to Hermie.
Then Hermieâs father appeared.
âAre you here for Hestie?â Hermie asked.
Thanatos shook his head and pointed at Taavi.
Telepathically, Thanatos said, Hades is here with his chariot beneath the helm of invisibility to evacuate the ship. Help me to get the others to the chariot. Iâll guide you to it.
As happy as Hermie was to see his father, the plan to evacuate seemed flawed. What about Pegasus?
Heâll be protected by the helm of invisibility, as long as heâs tethered to the chariot.
Meanwhile, Poseidon shot his trident at the ship, causing the boards to creek and moan. Thanatos disintegrated into an army and shielded the ship from Poseidonâs blows while Dione and Clymene held off the tritons.
Poros threw his lightning bolts at Poseidon and the sea monster, while Prometheus manned the ship, struggling to keep it from capsizing. At the same time, Jinsoo and Hermie helped Thanatos load the invisible chariot with the rest of the crew. To make this easier, Alastair took Hestie into his arms so that Hermie could help bring Pegasus from below deck. Because there wasnât enough room in the chariot for all of them, Hermie, Del, and Jinsoo climbed astride Pegasus with Hermie in the front and Jinsoo in the back.
It was obvious to anyone looking where the invisible chariot was parked, because its passengers did not also become invisible until they entered it. Poseidon acted accordingly, shooting toward them with his paralyzing trident, which Thanatos fought off with his shield. Then Hermes appeared beside Thanatos to block some of the attacks so the chariot could safely take off.
When Del saw Taaviâs desiccated corpseâor what was left of itâcrumbling and washing away on the deck below, she wrapped her arms around Hermieâs waist and sobbed against his back.
Iâm so sorry, Hermie said to her telepathically in the chaos.
Hadesâs two black stallions led the chariot and the tethered Pegasus from the ship and into the night sky.
What about Poros and Captain? Hermie asked Hades telepathically.
Hades did not reply. Instead, he turned the chariot nearly perpendicular to the sea and drove it down into the nearest chasm toward the Underworld.
