Chapter Five

Promises and Obligations

Becky was fixated on the tales she would have to spin in order to save her job. The house of cards she’d constructed had no hope of withstanding even the most superficial scrutiny. She had no doubt Mrs. Teague had already called the superintendent and told him she’d seen Becky’s car at B&D. Would he call and check on the health of my mom? She closed her eyes and wished for sleep. It didn’t matter anymore. There was no way she could concoct a story that would fix everything at school and still allow her to get the day off. She’d already ruined any credit she might have had and there was no way to get it back. Now she would have to pay the bill.

Her sleep was tortured by nightmares. The insatiable lust she shared with Valentine was interrupted by constant knocks at her door. The heart-wrenching disappointment in Valentine’s face when Becky asked her to hide. A trial before teachers and parents; tied to a chair as they called her a liar, a cheat and a lesbian whore. Her tears and pleas for understanding falling on deaf ears as the entire courtroom laughed and pointed. “You aren’t fit to teach our children!” Mrs. Teague, now the prosecutor, demanding satisfaction. The superintendent sitting as judge, laughing as he promised to bring the full extent of the law to bear. “We will ruin your life and that is only the beginning!”

Becky woke in soaking sheets with tears running down her cheeks. She sat up and pulled her knees to her chest as sobs racked her body. I want you, Valentine. You’re all I need but I can’t go through this alone.

Becky tossed and turned for two more hours before she gave up on sleep and climbed out of bed. She made coffee and straightened the house she’d already cleaned. The sweaty sheets were stripped and changed before she fluffed and positioned each pillow against the headboard with care. In sheer frustration she threw the last pillow against the wall and wiped the damp from her cheeks again.

What’s the point? Even if I could get free, I’ll be fired and homeless. You’ll leave me just the same.

She showered and dressed slowly, racking her depressed brain for a solution. Any solution. I’ll just tell them I’m sick and go home early. She did feel nauseated.

Becky looked at her puffy eyes in the mirror and took a deep breath. Walking down her hallway, she counted to ten and opened her door.

It’s not fair.

Becky walked through the main office on the way to hers. She gave a sickly smile to her secretary. “Good morning, Natalie.”

The young, dark-haired woman looked up from her paperwork with surprise. “Ms. Sanchez. Superintendent Gonzales called this morning.”

“Okay, Natalie. I’ll call him back later.” Next week later. She continued toward her office, planning to barricade the door until 11:00 when she planned to become “critically ill”.

“Uhm. Ms. Sanchez?” Natalie called nervously.

Becky was already exasperated and moody.
