Needing Her That Night Excerpt

Dear Reader,

Please enjoy part of chapter one of the next book in the When Couples Play series. Eli thinks his night is going to be boring at work until SHE walks in.

Chapter 1

I tap my pen on the counter and scan my comic book store to make sure there aren’t any customers needing anything. The main sales floor isn’t large, but we have several side rooms and the largest is bustling. I’ve spent most of the night sitting on a stool behind the counter, bored out of my mind. Usually I text my wife during my downtime late at night, but my wife, Mindy, is staying at her sister’s tonight helping with wedding planning. They are probably busy so I don’t want to bother them. At 39, her sister is younger than she is, and getting married in a couple of weeks — for the fifth time. Her fiancé seems like a good egg, so I hope this one sticks. Everyone deserves some happiness in life.

When I was a kid, it was my dream to own a comic book store when I grew up, and sure, I’m living the dream, but it isn’t turning out like I pictured. First off, I’m not getting wealthy. In my head, when I was younger, I always assumed people who owned any type of store were rich, but apparently that’s not how it goes in the comic store business. I make a decent income, but I won’t be retiring at age 50, that’s for certain. Another thing I didn’t anticipate when I was a kid was that to make money, you need to offer a variety of options. We provide gaming rooms people can use because it gets them in the door, and then they stay and buy our products. We also have an area of computers that people can rent by the hour for LAN parties — or hell, just to do their homework if they want.

A couple of months ago I hired Josh, a punk guy in his early 20s with no real life ambition yet, but he’s a wiz with computers and keeps them updated and running smoothly for me. Josh enjoys working Friday nights, so he’s the only other employee here with me. We stay open late on Fridays for a trading card game tournament and it’s after midnight already. I always let Josh go home before me. No point in making us both wait for the games to finish.

Josh comes out of the computer room, closes the door behind him, and locks it with his key. He’s lanky and slightly unkempt, but not enough to bug the customers. He saunters over to me, coming around to the back of the counter, and opens the drawer under the cash register to grab his paycheck.
