I MET JUNE THAT NIGHT for a celebratory dinner at our favorite sushi place.

“So, I have some news,” she said. I’d been so busy gushing about my dresses, I hadn’t had a chance to ask her how things were going with her jobs and with Matt.

“Tell me, tell me.” I put my chin in my hands.

“I think I’m in love with Matt,” she said, poking at her sushi with both chopsticks.

“And?” I said. This wasn’t news to me. I’d known she was in love with him from that first day.

“And what? I just told you I’m in love with someone I’ve only been dating for a few weeks and you’re acting like I just told you I enjoy kombucha.” I made a face.

“Ew, I will never understand kombucha. Anyway, you don’t think that I knew you were in love with him? It’s been all over your face since the very beginning. I’m surprised it took you this long to figure it out.” She gaped at me.

“Are you serious?” I nodded.

“Yeah, of course. I’m your best friend. Of course I was going to notice when you were in love with someone. He’s great, June. I think he’s a real keeper.” I couldn’t help but give him my endorsement. He was good to her and she adored him. What more could you want?

“You think so?” she asked, blushing. “I think he’s pretty great.”

“He is. I promise.” I let her go on about how much she adored him and it only hurt a little bit. I still hadn’t forgotten about my promise to open myself up to love again, but I was still stuck on how the hell to do that.

I’d have to start somewhere, but where was that? I couldn’t just walk into the street and be hit by love. I was more likely to get hit by a Duckboat and my family would get a huge payout in the inevitable lawsuit.

“And you?” she asked, after she’d talked herself out about Matt and we were sharing a bowl of green tea ice cream.

“What about me?” I asked, even though I knew what the question was.

“How are you doing in your quest for love?” I shrugged one shoulder.

“I’m not doing anything. I’m working. I’m busy. I don’t have time right now, especially with this dress that I’ve got to design. That’s going to take a lot of energy.” They were all sad excuses, and we both knew that.

“If you don’t do it, you’re going to look back ten years from now and wish you did.” We both knew that was right, and I groaned and put my head on the sticky table.

“I know it’s not easy, but you’ve got to start somewhere. Bad dates can be fun,” she said. I lifted my head and glared.

“Okay, they make good stories? And sometimes you have to go through a bunch of bad ones before you find a good one.” That didn’t sound like a good time at all. I didn’t want stories. I wanted love. True love.
