RUNNING HOME
It was early in the morning when Patu was roasting some meat on a fire. It was a long time since he had seen the Yupâik people. He was living off hunting and usually, his free meals came from his services. Hunting was not that fun at all, but he needed to eat. The animals he hunted were getting harder and harder to catch.
Patu took a bite out of the meat and savored the moment. He had eaten rabbit and ptarmigan for a while. The change of the menu, with lots of fat, made him feel better. As he took a bite, the fatty part of the meat seemed to melt in his mouth. âMmm,â Patu whispered to himself. Suddenly, he felt something strong in his back.
After two days, when his brother didnât return to his village of Gali, Napaq went out to look for his brother. He told everyone that his brother hadnât returned the following day while out checking his traps. Fearing the worst for his brother, he went off to check on him.
Napaq got ready and took off that morning to check on his brotherâs favorite trapping spots. As Napaq was checking his brotherâs trapping spots, some of his traps had caught animals, but he left them alone. My lazy brother can pick them up for himself, Napaq thought to himself.
Not too far from his brotherâs traps, he saw what looked like a smoke fire. Seeing the smoke, he got really excited. I hope thatâs my brother! he was happily thinking to himself.
Getting excited, Napaq started running toward the direction of the smoke and climbed up the hill. When he reached the top, he stopped and scanned the area of the campfire. Beside the campfire, Napaq spotted a man, but he didnât recognize his parka. The man was sitting down and he seemed to be cooking something. He was about to go check him out, but he spotted something out of the ordinary. On the manâs right was something that looked like human legs with blood all around it, but he wasnât sure. Napaq looked closely at the leg this time and recognized his brotherâs muskrat pants!
Napaq felt his stomach purge. He killed him and I think and I think heâs eating him! Napaq screamed to himself.
Before the man looked around at him, Napaq took off running toward his home as fast as he could, so he could report to his people what he just witnessed. Just running only a few steps, he stopped and vomited all over himself. After vomiting the rest of his meal, he gathered himself and started running again.
By the fire, Patu looked back and saw a man running away. Fresh meat and not frozen, Patu maliciously thought to himself. He grabbed the dead manâs bow and arrow and started running toward the runner. He hastily climbed up the hill and the man he was pursuing was running away from him. Patu aimed at the man and shot him.
Napaq started running at full speed.
